Shawn Michaels’ strongest WrestleMania matches are the two bouts with The Undertaker, led by their 2009 classic, followed by his ladder match with Razor Ramon, his Iron Man Match with Bret Hart, and story-driven contests against Ric Flair and Kurt Angle. The best starting point depends on what you want to watch: high-risk spectacle, a long test of endurance, technical wrestling, or an emotionally complete story.
What are Shawn Michaels’ best WrestleMania matches?
This list weighs match structure, stakes, outcome and the kind of viewing experience each bout offers. WWE’s 2017 ranking placed Michaels and The Undertaker’s WrestleMania 25 match first among its 35 best WrestleMania matches. It also ranked the Kurt Angle match fifth, the Razor Ramon ladder match seventh, the Bret Hart match eighth and the Ric Flair match tenth. Those positions reflect WWE’s editorial judgment, not an objective measure or universal consensus. Axios independently placed the WrestleMania 25 match at number two on its 2024 list of the ten greatest WrestleMania matches.

- Shawn Michaels vs. Kurt Angle — WrestleMania 21 (April 3, 2005; 27:25)
- The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels — Streak vs. Career Match, WrestleMania XXVI (March 28, 2010; 23:58)
1. The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 25
This is the clearest first choice for an all-around showcase. WWE’s retrospective highlights the string of near-falls and a moonsault from Michaels that The Undertaker catches, turning it into a Tombstone position. The sequence of reversals and escalating danger makes the match feel like a contest in which either man could seize the result at any moment.
The finish also gives the match a larger purpose: it leads directly into their career-stakes rematch the following year. WWE ranked it first in its 2017 WrestleMania list; Axios placed it second in its 2024 selection. Those are two editorial rankings that point to the bout’s prominence, rather than proof of a single objective ranking.

2. Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon at WrestleMania X
The Intercontinental Championship ladder match is the best pick for a landmark high-risk showcase. WWE’s WrestleMania X event page says the bout broke new ground in high-risk competition; its later ranking recalls Michaels’ ladder splash and says Ramon unified the two Intercontinental titles. WWE’s official results record Ramon as the winner and champion.
At 18:48 in WWE’s 2017 ranking, it is also the shortest match on this list. Its importance is not simply that it features dangerous ladder spots: the ladder is central to how the wrestlers pursue the title, giving the match a distinct structure and a clear visual goal.

3. Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XII
The 60-Minute WWE Iron Match is the choice for viewers who want to follow pacing and endurance over a long stretch. WWE records the result as 1–0 for Michaels in overtime, with a listed duration of 1:01:52. The extra time beyond the stated 60 minutes is integral to the result, not an unrelated extension.
WWE describes it as the only Iron Man Match at WrestleMania and the only WrestleMania meeting between Hart and Michaels. That makes it a singular entry in Michaels’ WrestleMania record: the format itself creates the central tension, and overtime supplies the decisive turn.

4. Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair at WrestleMania XXIV
This career-threatening match is the strongest choice when story and character matter more than a stipulation built around a physical object or a clock. WWE describes Michaels sending Flair off in an emotional WrestleMania farewell. One moment distills the conflict: Michaels hesitates before Sweet Chin Music, giving Flair the chance to put him in the Figure-Four Leglock.
The match lasts 20:24 in WWE’s 2017 ranking. Its significance rests on the dramatic weight of the farewell and Michaels’ hesitation, not on a claim that it is the most technically elaborate bout here.
5. Shawn Michaels vs. Kurt Angle at WrestleMania 21
Choose the Angle match for a hard-fought technical contest with a submission finish. WWE’s account says Angle won by submission after Michaels spent two minutes in the Ankle Lock. The finish makes the outcome legible: Michaels is unable to escape the hold, and Angle wins without a disputed count or a title change being the focus.
WWE lists the match at 27:25 and ranked it fifth in its 2017 selection. It offers a contrast to the near-fall spectacle of WrestleMania 25 and the story-centered farewell against Flair.

6. The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XXVI
The rematch completes the story begun at WrestleMania 25. This time, Michaels stakes his career on the result. WWE says The Undertaker won, extending his WrestleMania streak to 18–0, and describes the loss as the end of Michaels’ in-ring career at that event.
WWE’s 2017 ranking lists the match at 23:58. It works best watched as the emotional conclusion to the earlier Undertaker match: the stakes are no longer just whether Michaels can win, but what defeat will cost him.
