Paresh Rawal gives the conflict a strong emotional center, though the film’s 140-minute length and uneven final stretch keep it from landing with equal force throughout.
What is Shastry Viruddh Shastry about?
Yaman, played by Kabir Pahwa, is raised in Panchgani by his grandparents, Manohar (Paresh Rawal) and Urmila (Neena Kulkarni). His parents, Malhar (Shiv Panditt) and Mallika (Mimi Chakraborty), work in Mumbai and visit him. When they plan to move to the United States with their son, Manohar resists. A dispute over guardianship follows, carrying the family argument into court.

The setup gives the film two connected sources of tension: the grandparents’ role in a working family’s childcare, and the question of who should make decisions for Yaman. The legal contest raises the stakes, but the personal conflict is the story’s anchor: each adult believes they are acting in the child’s best interests, while Yaman risks becoming the subject of a decision made by everyone else.
How effectively does the family conflict work?
The premise is recognisable without being simple. The film points to the reliance some urban working couples place on grandparents for childcare, but it does not reduce the dispute to a neat choice between loving grandparents and absent parents. It gives the caregiving arrangement emotional weight and asks what happens when an arrangement that has worked for a family collides with a major change in the parents’ plans.

That tension is where the drama is most affecting. Manohar’s resistance can be read as both an expression of attachment and a challenge to the parents’ authority. The court setting makes the family’s competing claims explicit, while the child’s position complicates the adults’ certainty. The result is more compelling as a portrait of a strained family than as a tightly paced legal drama.
Paresh Rawal leads a strong cast
Rawal makes Manohar convincing as a man whose outward stiffness gives way to tenderness. His performance lends the grandfather’s objections emotional credibility without making the conflict disappear. The film’s central dilemma depends on the audience understanding why he is reluctant to let Yaman go, and Rawal supplies that feeling without turning the role into a simple plea for sympathy.

Neena Kulkarni, Shiv Panditt, Mimi Chakraborty and Kabir Pahwa complete the central family. Reviewers also singled out the performances as a strength of the film. The ensemble helps sustain a story in which the dispute is not merely procedural: the adults’ relationships with Yaman, and with one another, are what give the courtroom proceedings their emotional charge.
Where the film loses momentum
The principal reservation is duration. Scroll reviewer Deepa Gahlot found the material stretched at 140 minutes; Abhishek Srivastava’s Times of India review likewise objected to the length and said the final hour drags. In that later stretch, the drama can become preachy, and the last thirty minutes were identified as a particular drawback.

News India Times also questioned the climax’s execution, including the judge’s handling of Yaman’s stated wishes. That reservation points to a real pressure point in the premise: the child’s perspective matters, but the courtroom resolution has to make room for it credibly. The ending does not satisfy every reviewer on that score.
How does it relate to the Bengali film Posto?
Shastry Viruddh Shastry is the Hindi version of Posto, the 2017 Bengali film by Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee. Roy and Mukherjee directed the Hindi film as well; the original’s grandfather was played by Soumitra Chatterjee, while Rawal takes that role here. The remake connection is useful context for viewers deciding whether to watch the Hindi version or seek out the Bengali original, but the available critical accounts do not establish a scene-by-scene artistic comparison.

Rawal described the story’s emotions as drawing on lived experience in an India Today interview published on 1 November 2023: “We are drawing this from our life only. These emotions, situations and interpretations, the responses are drawn from your own life. And that remains a part of your life afterwards as well.” His comment offers context for his engagement with the material; it should be understood as his reflection, not a claim about every cast member’s process.

The film opened in cinemas on 3 November 2023. Srivastava’s 3.0/5 is one critic’s rating, not an aggregate audience score. A News India Times review credited Netflix as presenting the film, but that does not establish current availability in any particular country.
