Shaquille O’Neal’s best-documented charitable efforts include school-supply drives, youth facilities, holiday giving and grants for school sports. The largest figures attached to them describe different things—children reached, supplies distributed, project budgets or partner funding—not a verified ranking of Shaq’s personal donations.
School supplies: Shaq-to-School
Shaq-to-School is a Shaquille O’Neal Foundation program that provides basic school materials to children facing socioeconomic challenges. In 2019, the Foundation said its Los Angeles and Las Vegas giveaways benefited nearly 5,000 children, primarily from Title I schools. Students received backpacks with supplies and shoes; another 250,000 supplies went to Communities In Schools sites around the country. The Foundation put the effort’s estimated economic impact at $10 million. That is the Foundation’s estimate, and its page does not explain the methodology or describe it as an independently audited valuation. The Foundation’s annual-programs page also records later events: hundreds of students attended in Las Vegas in 2022, with 500 additional backpacks and supply sets donated in Las Vegas and Atlanta; in 2024, the program served hundreds through Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada and Communities In Schools of Nevada.
Youth facilities and sports spaces
The Foundation’s capital work supports places where young people can learn, play and access services. Its planned Shaquille O’Neal Youth Complex, developed with Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada and Communities In Schools Nevada, is described as a multi-million-dollar project spanning more than 30,000 square feet. The Foundation says it is expected to support 150–180 young people daily after school. Planned spaces include a CIS Alumni Center and academic, social, emotional, recreational and technology resources.
Another documented project is the $1 million renovation of the Shaquille O’Neal Boys & Girls Club of Henry County, which opened in August 2021 and serves more than 300 members. The Foundation also lists court refurbishments in Las Vegas, Newark, Atlanta and Los Angeles, a multi-use Comebaq Court project, and an artificial-turf sports field installed with Reebok’s support at a Nevada club. It does not state costs for most of those individual court and field projects. These are Foundation-associated projects and service figures, not a ledger of money personally donated by O’Neal. Holiday giving: Shaq-a-Claus
Shaq-a-Claus is one of O’Neal’s longest-running public charitable programs. The Foundation says it has operated annually since 1997 and has provided tens of thousands of young people with toys, clothing, meals and other support. It names Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Boston and New Jersey among the places served. The Foundation gives neither a precise cumulative recipient count nor a total dollar value, so “tens of thousands” is the available measure, not an exact lifetime total. School sports grants and partner donations
Get Game Ready Grants
In summer 2020, Icy Hot and the Shaquille O’Neal Foundation launched Get Game Ready Grants for school sports programs affected by the pandemic. The Foundation says the joint program awarded more than $320,000 to 23 public high schools in 13 states for equipment, transportation, personal protective equipment and other needs. The published figure is the program’s grant total; the source does not say O’Neal personally funded the full amount. See the Foundation’s past-giving page.

JCPenney’s Giving Tuesday donations
At a 2020 Giving Tuesday event in Hurst, Texas, JCPenney announced more than $240,000 in company charitable donations. The largest named gift was JCPenney’s $100,000 donation to Communities In Schools. O’Neal, a board member, accepted that gift on the organization’s behalf; it was a company contribution, not evidence of a personal $100,000 donation from him. These efforts cannot be ranked fairly as Shaq’s largest personal gifts: their figures measure unlike things, including people served, supplies distributed, estimated economic impact, construction work, capacity, grants and corporate donations. The public sources cited here do not provide a complete ledger of O’Neal’s personal giving or comparable costs for every program.

The Shaquille O’Neal Foundation says it works primarily in Atlanta and Las Vegas with underserved youth, including through Boys & Girls Clubs and Communities In Schools. Its FAQs say giving is routed through nonprofit partners and organizations; it does not accept unsolicited funding requests from organizations or make grants directly to individuals. The Foundation describes itself as a 501(c)(3) public charity and says donations to it support programming and capital projects. Those statements concern the Foundation and should not be taken as assurances about other organizations. See its partner information, FAQs and donation page.
Foundation finances are another distinct measure. Form 990 filings can help explain the organization’s annual revenue and expenses, but those amounts are not the same as Shaq’s personal donations or the value of a particular project. ProPublica’s Nonprofit Explorer presents filing-based figures by year.
