Shannon McGuire has described entering modelling as an Aboriginal woman and finding herself the only Aboriginal person in the room. In a 2022 interview, she recalled that neither she nor the people around her knew how to navigate that experience—and that she had not yet realised her culture and heritage could help shape her public identity. Her account is a personal history, not a measure of every model’s experience.
What was McGuire’s struggle as a model of colour?
McGuire’s central difficulty, as she described it, was being visibly alone in modelling spaces without knowing how to bring her Aboriginal identity into her work on her own terms. “I was the only Aboriginal person in the room when I started. And no one knew what to do with that, I didn’t know what to do with that either, I didn’t realise that I could have used my culture and my heritage to really build a brand for myself,” she told PerthNow on 6 July 2022.
The remark describes McGuire’s own recollection and the uncertainty she experienced. It does not establish how common that situation was across the industry, but it makes clear what she says was missing for her: recognition that her heritage could be part of her professional identity, rather than something she had to leave outside the room.
From a television competition to modelling work
PerthNow reported that McGuire was second runner-up on the inaugural season of Australia’s Next Top Model in 2005. After the show, she became one of the first Indigenous women signed to Chic Management and later competed in Miss Universe Australia. Those milestones provide context for her career; they do not mean her early experience of isolation was resolved simply by becoming more visible.

How McGuire says the model’s role has changed
McGuire contrasted the expectations she felt early in her career with a greater capacity for models to shape their public identities and express opinions. “A model wasn’t seen as a brand. Back then, I felt like a walking coathanger, it was shut up and look pretty, and do what you were told, but now models have so much more power,” she told PerthNow.
That is McGuire’s perspective on a change in models’ agency, not an independently measured before-and-after account of the whole fashion industry. In her telling, the difference is between being treated primarily as a body displaying clothes and having more say over a public brand and voice.

Why she wants opportunities to last
McGuire said she wants Indigenous visibility in fashion to become lasting opportunity, with Aboriginal people hired for their professional skills rather than as a gesture. “I suppose my goal really is to make sure that this isn’t just a trend and that it stays embedded within the fashion industry. And that Aboriginal people with real skills are booked and hired for their skills, not just the Aboriginality and not just because someone wants to tick a box,” she said.
Her distinction is between being seen and being valued as a skilled professional. The first can be temporary; the second depends on people continuing to be booked and hired for their work.

Mentoring through Miss NAIDOC
McGuire’s work has also included mentoring through Miss NAIDOC. A 2021 marie claire Australia feature traced the program’s development: Glenda Kickett wanted to restart Miss NAIDOC in 2009 as an ambassador and development program, then connected with McGuire around the idea of a leadership program. “When I connected with Shannon McGuire, we had the same idea that it should be a leadership program,” Kickett said.
In 2021, marie claire described the program as a six-week leadership and empowerment program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. The feature reported more than 500 applications and nine finalists for that edition; those figures refer to the cohort reported in 2021, not current program totals.

PerthNow reported in 2022 that the program expanded to include men after community feedback. That is a dated description: the reporting does not establish the program’s present-day structure.

In June 2022, ABC News reported that McGuire joined an all-Aboriginal fashion showcase tour in Europe, with shows in Brussels, London and Dublin. She described the designs as carrying connections to Country, culture and stories. Speaking to ABC News, she said: “It was about really telling a story, or the story, the real story of Australia, and I think we found a lot of strength in that.”

The showcase offered a way to present fashion not just as clothing but as a vehicle for cultural storytelling. It also connects with McGuire’s earlier reflection: she had not initially recognised how her heritage could inform her own brand, while later describing the strength of stories carried through Aboriginal design.
