What was reported about Shang-Chi’s role?
Murphy’s Multiverse, attributing its account to Inverse, reported that “in the original plan for Avengers 5, then called Kang Dynasty, Shang-Chi would’ve been one of the film’s main leads.” Read the report.
That wording supports a major intended role, but it does not establish that Shang-Chi would have been the only protagonist. It also does not confirm a final cast list, billing, or completed script. The claim is reporting about an original plan, not an announcement from Marvel.
What did Simu Liu say about appearing in the film?
In a separate comment reported by ComicBook.com, Simu Liu said he was “pretty sure” he would appear in The Kang Dynasty. He also cautioned that circumstances can change and that an actor knows for certain only when on set. His remark reflects his expectation at the time, not confirmed casting. Disney identifies Liu as the star of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Destin Daniel Cretton as that film’s director. That establishes their connection to Shang-Chi, but it does not confirm the planned Avengers story or cast. Disney’s interview with Cretton.
How the original plan changed
Cretton was attached to direct The Kang Dynasty before exiting. In October 2024, the Associated Press reported that the project had been reimagined as Avengers: Doomsday. The reported Shang-Chi role concerns the earlier Kang-focused plan; it should not be carried over as a confirmed detail about Doomsday. Associated Press coverage.

Marvel’s release-schedule announcement listed a film under the title Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, documenting that the project was publicly scheduled under that name at the time. Why the Shang-Chi sequel added to expectations
Liu said the Shang-Chi sequel was expected to follow an Avengers movie, while noting that the schedule kept shifting. What the Kang comics can—and cannot—tell us
Marvel’s comics background can explain the character mythology surrounding Kang, but it cannot establish the plot of an unreleased film. Marvel identifies the Council of Kangs’ first comics appearance as Avengers (1963) #267. That is comics context, not evidence that the abandoned film would have adapted that story or featured a particular storyline for Shang-Chi. Marvel’s Council of Kangs explainer.

- Whether Shang-Chi would have been the sole protagonist, rather than one of several main leads.
- The complete intended cast, final script, or full plot of The Kang Dynasty.
- Whether any of the earlier plan for Shang-Chi carried into Avengers: Doomsday.
The clearest distinction is between the reported original plan and confirmed facts: Shang-Chi was reportedly among the main leads, and Liu expected to appear, but neither statement amounts to an official final casting or story confirmation.
