The distinction matters: “Waka Waka” was the official song of the 2010 tournament, while Shakira’s 2014 performance song was not the official song that year.
What songs did Shakira perform at the World Cup?
Shakira appeared at the closing ceremonies of three consecutive FIFA World Cups. The performances are memorable for different reasons: the 2006 appearance paired her with Wyclef Jean on a global hit; the 2010 ceremony brought the tournament’s official song to the stage with South African band Freshlyground; and the 2014 performance featured a separate song from the tournament’s designated official track.

Germany 2006: “Hips Don’t Lie” with Wyclef Jean
At the closing ceremony in Berlin’s Olympiastadion, Shakira and Wyclef Jean performed “Hips Don’t Lie,” her hit collaboration with the Haitian-American musician. FIFA’s account places the performance at the end of the Germany 2006 tournament. It is best described as a ceremony performance, not as the official song of that World Cup. FIFA’s retrospective and Sony Music España’s chronology both connect the song with her 2006 appearance.
South Africa 2010: “Waka Waka” with Freshlyground
“Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” was the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Shakira recorded and performed it with Freshlyground, a South African band. The collaboration brought the host country into the song’s performance as well as its tournament setting. Sony’s announcement says the track was selected by FIFA and Sony as the official song and included on Listen Up! The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album. Sony Music’s announcement

Brazil 2014: “La La La (Brazil 2014)” with Carlinhos Brown
For the Brazil 2014 closing ceremony, Shakira performed “La La La (Brazil 2014),” featuring Brazilian musician Carlinhos Brown. Sony Music España announced the performance ahead of the July 13 ceremony and noted that the song appeared on the tournament album One Love, One Rhythm: The Official 2014 FIFA World Cup as well as Shakira’s album SHAKIRA. Was “La La La” the official 2014 World Cup song?
No. “La La La (Brazil 2014)” was Shakira’s song for the closing-ceremony performance, but FIFA identifies “We Are One (Ole Ola)” as the official song of the 2014 World Cup. A song’s appearance on an official tournament album does not, by itself, make it the tournament’s designated official song. FIFA’s official-song roundup

Why these performances stand out
The appeal of Shakira’s World Cup appearances lies in their distinct roles rather than a provable ranking. In 2006, she brought an established hit to the closing ceremony with Wyclef Jean. In 2010, she performed the official tournament song alongside Freshlyground. In 2014, she returned with a Brazil-themed performance song and Carlinhos Brown, while the tournament’s official song was a different track.
