Shahana Goswami says she finds it difficult to accept a project unless she feels strongly about it. In a May 5, 2024 interview with Scroll.in, the actor described an instinctive approach to choosing work: she weighs the project, her communication with its director, the writing and the characters. Her account is less a fixed career formula than a description of how creative conviction, working relationships and practical priorities meet in her decisions.
How Shahana Goswami decides whether to take a role
Goswami said she is generally instinctive about her choices. She looks at the project in front of her, how she and the director communicate, the nature of the writing and the characters. She did not describe a rule based on genre, role size or a particular kind of production; her emphasis was on whether the work and collaboration feel right to her.
She also said she likes auditioning. Being asked to audition means a filmmaker has seen something she can do and is considering her on that basis, rather than hiring her simply because of her name. That preference fits her emphasis on the work itself and the creative exchange around it.
Goswami said she manages her own work and that having representatives had not worked for her. She wants varied projects, but may go a long stretch without accepting one if she does not feel strongly about it. In her account, selectivity is not a claim that every offered role is unsuitable; she said she continued to get work even when it was not always the work she wanted.

Why authenticity matters to her acting
Goswami said she is not a trained actor and does not follow a fixed process for building a character. She described her acting as intuitive and said she worries about whether a performance feels authentic: when she watches herself, she does not want to feel that she is merely acting.
Director Sandhya Suri, discussing their work together on Santosh, described Goswami as instinctive and said they tried to keep performances specific to each scene and in the moment. Suri also praised Goswami’s memorisation of lines and her search for emotional truth. Their comments point to a shared focus on particular scenes and truthful responses, rather than a prescribed technique.

What she brought to Santosh
The interview appeared ahead of the film’s Cannes premiere in 2024. Goswami plays a police constable who, as she described the character, is a housewife who becomes a constable because of circumstances. She framed the story as one about finding oneself while holding power.
Goswami’s casting followed the film team’s attention to her performance in Nandita Das’s Zwigato (2022), whose Mumbai premiere brought her to the casting team’s notice. The interview thus connects one performance to another without presenting her career as a single, predictable path.

Goswami advised aspiring actors to assess what drives them, naming creativity, fame, stability and making money as possible priorities. She said this is not a matter of judging one priority against another, but of figuring out what matters most to the individual. She did not present her own preference for selective, instinctive choices as a universal prescription for an acting career.

Background and influences
Goswami spent her formative years in Delhi and learned Odissi from Kiran Segal. Her parents acted in plays, but she said cinema interested her more than stage acting. Those details offer context for her path into performance without suggesting that she followed a formal acting-training route.
