Lumon’s Macrodata Refinement numbers are part of a process for building consciousnesses for Gemma Scout, the finale reveals. But the series still has not given viewers a literal key for decoding the digits. The refiners sort number clusters according to the emotional reactions they provoke; that sorting task is clearer than the numbers’ precise technical meaning or Lumon’s ultimate plan.
What are the numbers in Severance for?
The season-two finale reveals that Macrodata Refinement (MDR) is tied to building consciousnesses for Gemma Scout, and that the Cold Harbor room is a final test for her. Series creator Dan Erickson discussed the reveal and the questions it leaves open in The Washington Post’s interview about the finale.
That is the strongest answer to the broad question of what MDR does, but it is not a complete technical explanation. The finale does not provide a digit-by-digit decoding key or fully explain how the refinement process builds Gemma’s consciousnesses. Erickson also said that the wider ramifications of Gemma’s tests were questions he hoped viewers would keep asking.
What do the numbers feel like to the refiners?
The refiners do not work from an understood codebook. They scan clusters and sort them into bins based on emotional or intuitive reactions they cannot explain. Director and executive producer Ben Stiller described the process as an emotional response to the numbers that the workers themselves do not understand in a Peabody Awards transcript.

The in-world Macrodata Refiner’s Orientation Booklet, as reported in episode analysis, associates the four bins with Kier’s four tempers:
- WO — woe: deep melancholy or despair.
- FC — frolic: joy, gaiety, or ecstasy.
- DR — dread: fear, anxiety, or apprehension.
- MA — malice: rage or a desire to do harm.
These labels describe the emotional categories used in the refinement task; they are not a published translation of the digits into words or events. The exact descriptions come from a secondary analysis citing the in-world booklet, as noted by TIME’s coverage of Gemma and the season-two theories.

Has the show decoded the digits themselves?
No digit-by-digit key is provided in the cited material. It establishes that number clusters evoke reactions that guide sorting, but not what any particular string literally represents. Claims that the displayed numbers are definitively brain waves—or that every sequence is random—go beyond what these sources establish.
Which theories are still theories?
It helps to separate claims by both evidence and scope: the finale’s reveal addresses MDR’s broad function; the bins describe the refiners’ immediate task; ideas about Lumon’s ultimate corporate agenda are wider inferences.

| Interpretation | Evidence status | What it explains |
|---|---|---|
| MDR helps build consciousnesses for Gemma; Cold Harbor is her final test. | Revealed by the season-two finale and discussed by creator Dan Erickson. | MDR’s broad purpose in the Gemma storyline, not its full technical mechanics. |
| WO, FC, DR, and MA sort clusters by emotional response. | Supported by the in-world booklet’s descriptions and Stiller’s account of the refiners’ intuitive reactions. | The sorting experience and the four categories, not a literal decoding of each digit. |
| Lumon is learning to suppress emotion or improve severance. | Fan inference, not established as the company’s sole or ultimate goal. | A possible wider use suggested by the emotional categories. |
| MDR files can affect events outside the department. | An allegation in the fictional companion e-book The Lexington Letter, not a verified explanation of every file or the finale’s reveal. | A possible connection between a completed file and an outside incident in the letter’s story. |
The Lexington Letter’s fictional whistleblower believes that finishing a file caused an explosion involving a truck belonging to Lumon rival Dorner Therapeutics. That is an allegation within the companion story, not confirmation that all MDR files have such consequences.
What do the characters’ early guesses mean?
They are character speculation, not solutions. One character jokes that the numbers concern cleaning a sea for human settlement; Irving suspects they are used to cut swear words from movies. The Peabody transcript presents these as in-character guesses, not as answers to the mystery.

What does Lumon’s larger plan have to do with severance?
Erickson has described Lumon through a company-as-human-being metaphor: “when it’s severed and when the pieces are separated, it’s weaker, and when the pieces come together, it’s stronger.” The quote appears in The Washington Post’s interview with the creator. It offers a way to think about Lumon’s interest in dividing and combining parts of a person, but it does not establish a complete explanation of the company’s endgame.
For a viewer, the safest distinction is between the revealed purpose of MDR in Gemma’s story and the still-unanswered questions about the method and the consequences. The finale answers more than the early theories did, without turning every number—or Lumon’s whole agenda—into a solved code.
