Spoilers for the Season 2 finale, “Cold Harbor.” Season 2 reveals what Mark’s numbers do: they relate to Gemma’s “tempers,” and completing a file creates a new consciousness for her. Cold Harbor is the last file. But that explains the process’s immediate function—not Lumon’s ultimate goal. The finale also leaves the goats’ larger purpose, Dr. Mauer’s warning, Gemma’s memory tests, and Mark and Helly’s fate unresolved.

The answers below reflect the finale and creator interviews published March 21, 2025. They do not establish whether later episodes have answered these questions.

What is Lumon doing with Mark’s numbers?

The finale connects Mark’s macrodata refinement work to Gemma. Cobel explains that the numbers convey Gemma’s “tempers”; each completed file creates a new consciousness for her, and Cold Harbor is the last file. The episode offers this as the immediate function of the work, not a full technical explanation of how the numbers produce those consciousnesses. TIME’s finale account describes Gemma’s final innie as number 25.

Why does Lumon want to create these consciousnesses?

That is the larger mystery the Cold Harbor reveal does not solve. The story ties refinement to Gemma, but does not explain why Lumon wants the process, how it serves the company, or what Kier’s ultimate agenda is. The Ringer’s post-finale analysis identifies Lumon’s broader purpose as a major remaining question.

Ideas such as engineering an ideal workforce or creating a way to avoid unpleasant experiences are speculation, not confirmed answers. The evidence establishes the link between Mark’s work and Gemma’s new consciousnesses; it does not establish what Lumon ultimately intends to do with them.

What are the goats for?

The finale gives the goats a ritual role, but not a practical explanation. TIME reports that Lumon planned to entomb Gemma with a sacrificial goat intended to guide her spirit to “Kier’s door.” The story does not explain what that journey means, why a goat is involved, or how the ritual fits into Lumon’s wider experiment. It is a clue about the company’s beliefs, not a settled account of its endgame.

Who does Dr. Mauer mean by “you’ll kill them all”?

The finale does not identify who Mauer means. Creator Dan Erickson told TV Insider that the question was one he hoped viewers would ask, but that he was not ready to answer it. He raised Gemma’s innies and other possibilities without confirming either interpretation. The warning could point to them, or to someone else; the available evidence does not settle it.

Why does Lumon test whether Gemma carries pain into a new innie?

The crib scene tests whether Gemma’s outside emotional associations carry into a new innie. Erickson told TheWrap that the scene was intentionally open to interpretation, and that viewers do not yet know why this question matters to Lumon.

That leaves both the experiment’s purpose and its result open. The scene does not establish that every trace of Gemma’s original self has been erased, or explain what Lumon would conclude if pain or memory did—or did not—carry across.

What does Gemma understand about severance?

It is unclear how much Gemma understands about severance. Erickson told TV Insider that she is intelligent and may be able to infer what has happened, but he did not describe her understanding as settled. In the moment, she sees the husband she has missed choosing to run away with someone else. What she knows about the machinery behind that choice remains uncertain.

Why does Mark choose Helly?

In the finale, innie Mark chooses to run with Helly rather than remain with Gemma. Erickson told The Washington Post that innie Mark has come to value his own life on equal footing with his outie’s. His decision is an assertion of that life and a desire to stay with Helly in that moment—not evidence that he has a clear escape plan. Erickson put it plainly: “I don’t think he has any plan.”

What happens to Mark and Helly after they run?

The finale ends with Mark and Helly running through Lumon. Their immediate survival and what they do next are not established by the finale or the cited post-finale coverage. The Ringer lists the ending among the questions left open, while Erickson’s comments to the Washington Post describe Mark’s choice in the moment rather than a plan for what follows.

What is answered—and what remains open?

  • Revealed: Mark’s refinement work is connected to Gemma’s tempers; completing files creates new consciousnesses for her, and Cold Harbor is the last file.
  • Still unknown: Lumon’s ultimate objective, the goats’ wider purpose, the people Mauer fears will be killed, why Lumon cares about memory and pain crossing into a new innie, and what happens to Mark and Helly after the finale.
  • Interpretation, not confirmation: Theories about Kier’s endgame, Mauer’s warning, Gemma’s understanding, and the experiment’s results should not be mistaken for answers established on screen.
