Severance Season 2, Episode 7: Why “Chikhai Bardo” Is So Jaw-Dropping

Spoilers for Severance Season 2, Episode 7. “Chikhai Bardo” makes Lumon’s severance experiments newly personal: Gemma is alive in the company’s custody, enduring separate trials through different severed versions of herself, while flashbacks show the warmth of her life with Mark. The episode’s force comes from putting those two realities side by side—not from settling the mysteries behind them.

What happens to Gemma in “Chikhai Bardo”?

The episode alternates between Mark and Gemma’s past and Gemma’s present on a hidden Lumon testing floor. In flashbacks, they meet at a blood drive at Ganz College, where Mark teaches history and Gemma teaches Russian literature. The blood-drive equipment bears Lumon’s waterdrop symbol, a detail that raises questions about how early the company’s influence reached into their lives.

In the present, Gemma is alive in Lumon’s custody. TIME describes multiple distinct innie versions of her, each associated with a separate room and trial. The experiences include a painful dental procedure, simulated flight turbulence, and the repetitive task of writing Christmas thank-you notes. Gemma tells Dr. Mauer that she does not remember what happens in the rooms, but physical pain can linger.

That divide gives the episode its emotional center. Gemma’s experiences are not an abstract demonstration of severance: they happen to someone whose love and history with Mark the audience has just been shown. Apple’s official synopsis captures the collision in one sentence: “An old romance intersects with a deadly present threat.” (Apple TV episode listing.)

Why does Gemma’s past with Mark change the episode?

The flashbacks make the testing-floor scenes more unsettling by giving them a human counterpoint. The Atlantic describes the past as rendered in dappled natural light, with ambient noise and a grainier film texture, in contrast to Lumon’s controlled spaces. That stylistic difference is not just a visual change: the memories offer a glimpse of ordinary closeness, while the tests reduce Gemma’s experience to rooms, tasks, and pain.

The episode also hints that Lumon may have been closer to the couple’s life before Gemma’s confinement than either of them knew. TIME points to Dr. Mauer appearing at the fertility clinic after Mark and Gemma’s miscarriage, alongside the waterdrop symbol on the blood-drive equipment. These details are clues, not proof that the episode explains exactly when or how the company intervened. The contrast between intimacy and institutional control is persuasive precisely because the past feels lived-in while the company’s intentions remain obscure.

What does “Chikhai Bardo” mean?

TIME describes the Chikhai bardo as a Buddhist transitional state between the first signs of death and the final breath. The episode uses that reference as an interpretive lens for divided consciousness, identity, and mortality; it should not be treated as a comprehensive account of Buddhist doctrine.

In a card scene recounted by TIME, Gemma describes the depicted figure as “the same guy fighting himself, defeating his own psyche. Ego death.” The line connects the image to the show’s recurring interest in fractured selves, but it does not provide a definitive key to every plot detail. The title’s resonance is suggestive rather than a complete explanation.

Why is Gemma on Lumon’s testing floor?

The episode establishes that Lumon is putting separate severed versions of Gemma through distinct trials, but it does not explain how the company creates those versions or what each test measures. Nor does it reveal the project’s complete purpose. Dr. Mauer tells Gemma, “You will see the world again, and the world will see you,” a promise that sounds consequential without clarifying what he means. (TIME’s episode account.)

Gemma asks about the remaining room, Cold Harbor, but the episode withholds what will happen there. Her question sharpens the sense that the testing floor is part of a larger project, while leaving the project’s logic beyond her—and the viewer’s—reach.

What is Cold Harbor?

In this episode, Cold Harbor is the name of a remaining room on the testing floor and a trial Gemma asks about. “Chikhai Bardo” does not show what the room contains or explain what the trial is intended to do. Dr. Mauer’s statement that Gemma will see the world again raises the stakes, but the episode does not establish whether that promise is connected to Cold Harbor or how it might come true.

What does the episode resolve—and what does it leave open?

“Chikhai Bardo” answers a major question about Gemma’s fate: she is alive, in Lumon’s custody, and subject to testing through multiple severed versions of herself. It also gives her and Mark a shared history that makes the consequences of that testing more intimate. But the reveal opens as many questions as it settles:

Best Value
  • How does Lumon produce multiple separate innies from Gemma, and what is each trial measuring?
  • What is Cold Harbor’s purpose, and what does Dr. Mauer mean when he says Gemma will see the world again?
  • How much did Lumon arrange or monitor before Gemma was confined? The blood-drive symbol and fertility-clinic clue suggest possible earlier involvement, but do not settle it.
  • How far should the title’s reference to a transitional state and Gemma’s “ego death” reading be taken? The episode supports the connection, not a definitive decoding of every plot element.

That balance helps explain why the episode feels so startling without requiring an objective ranking over every other installment. It reveals substantial character history and shifts Gemma’s story into the foreground, while the contrast between the outside-world memories and Lumon’s coercive routines gives the new information emotional weight. At the same time, the show deliberately leaves the mechanics and end goal of the experiments unresolved.
