Spoilers for Severance season 2, episode 7, “Chikhai Bardo.” The episode cuts between Mark and Gemma’s shared past and Gemma’s present-day captivity on Lumon’s testing floor. It shows Dr. Mauer overseeing her room-based sessions and links him to a fertility-clinic memory, while leaving the purpose of Cold Harbor—and Gemma’s ultimate fate—unresolved.
What happened to Gemma?
“Chikhai Bardo” reveals that Gemma is alive at Lumon, where she is sent through rooms that stage different experiences. Dr. Mauer supervises and assesses these sessions. The episode intercuts this testing-floor storyline with memories of Mark and Gemma’s relationship, giving the Lumon scenes a personal weight: the woman being tested is the person Mark loved, not merely the Ms. Casey he encountered at work.

The Ringer’s recap reports that Lumon intends to remove Gemma once Mark completes Cold Harbor. That is a threat attached to the project, not a resolution of her story: this episode does not show what happens to her afterward.
Who is Doctor Mauer?
Mauer is the doctor overseeing Gemma’s testing-floor experiences. He also appears in a memory at the couple’s fertility clinic, connecting him to Mark and Gemma’s life before the testing-floor scenes. The episode establishes that connection, but does not explain his complete history, how much authority he holds at Lumon, or why he is involved.

TIME discusses clues that may suggest Lumon’s reach into the couple’s earlier life, while describing the specifics as uncertain. The episode does not confirm a full account of how either Mark or Gemma came to be involved with the company, so explanations beyond what is shown remain theories.
What does “Chikhai Bardo” mean?
TIME describes Chikhai Bardo as a Buddhist concept associated with the transitional state around the onset of death and the period before the final breath. Against that context, the title and the episode’s imagery invite viewers to consider identity, ego, death and transition.

That is thematic context, not a literal explanation of Lumon’s fictional procedure. The title does not establish how severance works or provide a technical account of what the company is doing to Gemma.
What is Cold Harbor?
Cold Harbor is an important unfinished Lumon project, and Mark’s work on it is tied to the threat against Gemma. But episode 7 does not reveal the project’s full purpose or explain why Gemma is needed. It also leaves open what she will experience in the remaining room and what Mauer’s complete role is. Treat proposed answers to those questions as speculation, rather than facts established by this episode.
