Five months later, he returns to a Lumon floor that has been rearranged, his friends are missing, and the company is offering an account of the uprising that leaves key questions unanswered.
What is the title of Severance Season 2 Episode 1?
Apple lists the Season 2 premiere as “Hello, Ms. Cobel,” with a runtime of 57 minutes. The episode was released January 17, 2025. “Welcome Back, Mark S.” is the headline here, not the platform’s episode title. Apple TV’s episode listing identifies the episode, and Apple’s release announcement gives the premiere date.
Why does Mark return to Lumon?
At the end of Season 1, Mark’s innie heard his outie announce, “She’s alive!” The premiere resumes with him running to the wellness center to find Ms. Casey, only to discover she is gone. Back at his desk, he finds a replacement Macrodata Refinement team—Gwendolyn, Dario and Mark W.—instead of Dylan, Irving and Helly.
Milchick says five months have passed since the innies briefly emerged into the outside world. He also says Cobel has left Lumon and that he is now managing the severed floor. These are Milchick’s explanations, not independently confirmed background facts. The episode’s plot sequence is recounted by TVLine’s episode recap.

What does Lumon tell the innies about the uprising?
Milchick presents the aftermath as a success story: he says the innies were celebrated outside for exposing problems in the severance program. He blames Cobel’s departure on an alleged fixation with Mark. The episode does not establish that Lumon’s account is complete or trustworthy; the company controls what the innies are told, and they have limited means to check it.
Mark refuses to accept the replacement team as normal. He tries to frame Mark W. with a hostile note, but the attempt costs him his department-chief title. He then takes over the speaker in Milchick’s office and pleads with the board to bring his friends back. Milchick says the board does not speak to innies and sends Mark away in the elevator. When Mark returns to the severed floor, Dylan, Irving and Helly are there.

How do Mark, Helly, Irving and Dylan respond to returning?
The reunion brings the team back together, but it does not give them a shared understanding of what happened outside. Mark tells them Ms. Casey is his outie’s wife, Gemma, and says he wants to find her. Helly offers only a thin account of her time outside. Irving is shaken and says the outside world is not theirs.
| Innie | What they want or are told | What that means for their choice |
|---|---|---|
| Mark | He wants to find Gemma, whom he knows at work as Ms. Casey. | He chooses to stay at Lumon to search for her. |
| Helly | She agrees to help Mark, without offering a full account of her outside experience. | She stays on her own terms; that decision does not demonstrate trust in Lumon. |
| Irving | He is distressed by the outside world and wants the pain to end. | He tries to leave rather than resume work. |
| Dylan | Milchick tells him his wife is named Gretchen and raises the possibility of an Outie Visitation Suite. | Personal information and the prospect of contact become leverage in Lumon’s effort to keep him at work. |
Milchick tells the innies they are free to leave, but the offer comes alongside selective disclosures and promises of reform. Their different reactions make the choice less straightforward than a simple return-to-work decision: Mark is pursuing Gemma, Helly is helping him, Irving is overwhelmed, and Dylan has been given a personal inducement.

How does the premiere end?
The team is back at its desks by the closing moments, but returning to work has not resolved what happened during the five months between the uprising and Mark’s return. Mark continues to see flashes of Ms. Casey. The episode leaves open how much the innies can learn about their outies, what happened to Gemma, and whether Lumon’s promised changes are meaningful.
