“The We We Are” is the Season 1 finale of Severance. Dylan triggers Lumon’s overtime contingency, giving Mark, Irving, and Helly a brief chance to wake in the outside world as their innie selves—and to reveal what they learn before Lumon shuts the switch off.

What happens in Severance Season 1, Episode 9?
Dylan activates the overtime contingency, waking Mark, Irving, and Helly outside Lumon while they remain in their innie identities. Each is thrust into an unfamiliar setting with little time to understand where they are or get a message to someone who can act on it.
Mark finds a way to speak with Devon
Mark wakes at a gathering in the home of Ricken and Devon. He works out that Ricken is his brother-in-law and gets a private moment with Devon, who tells him that his outie chose severance after Gemma died.

Later, Mark sees a wedding photograph and recognizes Gemma as Ms. Casey, the wellness counselor from Lumon. He calls out that she is alive. The episode does not explain what happened to Gemma or where she is being kept.
Irving follows his outie’s clues
Irving wakes in his apartment and finds evidence that his outie has been tracking severed Lumon employees, including Burt. He drives to Burt’s home. When he sees Burt with another man, Irving pounds on the door and calls his name.

Helly learns who her outie is
At a gala, Helly discovers that her outie is Helena Eagan, a member of Lumon’s founding family. Helena’s severance was being used to promote the procedure publicly. Given access to a microphone, Helly identifies herself as an innie and condemns severance as a torturous experience. Natalie tackles her before she can take control of what happens next.
What does Helly find out about her outie?
Helly learns that she is Helena Eagan, whose family is closely tied to Lumon. The revelation sharply changes the stakes of her speech: she is not simply an employee criticizing her workplace, but an innie speaking against the procedure while her outie is being presented as its public advocate.

Is Gemma alive in the Severance finale?
Mark recognizes Gemma in a photograph as Ms. Casey and shouts, “She’s alive!” That is the episode’s revelation, not a full explanation. The finale leaves Gemma’s circumstances unresolved.
What happens to Irving and Burt?
Irving’s outie has been monitoring severed employees, and Burt is among them. Irving reaches Burt’s home and finds him with another man, but the episode does not provide a neat answer about their relationship or what Irving will do next.

How does “The We We Are” end?
While Mark, Irving, and Helly try to use their brief time outside Lumon, Milchick gets into the security room and stops Dylan. That ends the overtime contingency and returns control to Lumon. Mark’s cry that Gemma is alive is the last urgent message the episode gives us; the finale cuts off before it can become a rescue or an explanation.
