The company said the abuse must stop and that further harassment would be reported. Amewudah-Rivers later described the continuing impact and called for stronger support for performers across the industry.
Why did the producers speak out?
Following the cast announcement, racist abuse was directed online at a member of the company. In a statement reported by The Guardian on 5 April 2024, the Jamie Lloyd Company described a “barrage of deplorable racial abuse online” and said, “This must stop.” It said further abuse would be reported and that it would support and protect everyone in the company. The statement’s quoted passage did not name the person targeted; later reporting identified Amewudah-Rivers as the recipient of the abuse. The Guardian’s 5 April report

How did other performers respond?
On 10 April 2024, The Guardian reported that 883 performers had signed a solidarity letter organized by actor Susan Wokoma and writer Somalia Nonyé Seaton. The count refers to signatories, not to the number of people who posted abuse or to any measure of online support.
The letter condemned racist and misogynistic abuse and welcomed the company’s statement. It called for committed emotional support for Amewudah-Rivers and challenged the practice of leaving the person targeted to report abuse themselves. The letter said: “Too many times, Black performers – particularly Black actresses – are left to face the storm of online abuse after committing the crime of getting a job on their own.” The Guardian’s 10 April report also covered the letter; the document was hosted by TMZ.

What did Amewudah-Rivers say about the abuse?
In an interview with The Stage, quoted by The Guardian on 18 September 2024, Amewudah-Rivers said the abuse continued throughout the job. She said she received death threats and hate mail sent to the theatre, and recalled: “I didn’t feel safe at work.” These are her account of her experience; the reports do not independently quantify the abuse.
She called for broader conversations across the industry and better infrastructure to support actors. “Safety has to be at the forefront. We can’t do our best work if we don’t feel safe, if we don’t feel held, if we don’t feel understood,” she said. The Guardian’s September 2024 report recounts her interview and call for industry-wide action.

What is established—and what is not?
- The company publicly condemned racial abuse after the cast announcement and said further harassment would be reported.
- Amewudah-Rivers later said abuse persisted during the production and described threats and hate mail.
- The solidarity letter’s reported 883 signatories were performers who signed it; that figure does not measure the scale of the abuse.
- The cited reporting does not quantify the abusive posts, identify the people responsible, or establish what specific support measures were delivered by the company.
