Severance uses a workplace science-fiction premise to ask how institutions shape what people know, believe, and become. In an interview published by Ars Technica on January 31, 2025, creator Dan Erickson and cast members Adam Scott and Patricia Arquette discussed the show’s corporate-cult parallels, its science-fiction influences, and the challenge of playing a person divided between work and home.
Why does Severance ask whether Lumon is a corporation or a cult?
Erickson said the writers, director Ben Stiller, and actors watched cult documentaries while developing season two. They saw similarities between a cult, a company, and other systems of power—especially when a charismatic founder is revered. As Erickson put it, “There’s this weird gray zone between a cult and a company, or any system of power, especially one where there is sort of a charismatic personality at the top of it like Kier Eagan.”
That is a creative comparison, not a diagnosis of real companies or a claim that Lumon is based on any single real-world group. The show’s premise makes the comparison legible: employees are cut off from knowledge of their lives outside work, while Lumon controls what information reaches them inside.
Information and division as tools of control
Erickson also described Lumon’s separation of departments and the distrust it cultivates between them. He connected that arrangement to divide-and-conquer: those in power can turn groups against one another, making it harder for them to recognize what is happening above them. The point is not only that a workplace can be absurd or oppressive; it is that controlling information and relationships can shape what people accept as normal.

Arquette’s research was context, not a direct source
Patricia Arquette said she was interested in cult documentaries before receiving the pilot. She mentioned Wild Wild Country, material about Scientology, military schools, and other hierarchical structures as part of her thinking about her character’s history. She described the creative process this way: “So it was fun coming up with this history and where things began and what they’re referencing.” Those examples explain her research context; they do not establish that the series adapts any of those groups.
How does the severance premise shape identity?
In the series, people do not remember what happens at work when they are at home, or what happens at home while they are at work. That split opens a storytelling possibility: the same person can live two lives with sharply different knowledge, priorities, and relationships.

Adam Scott said he approaches the two versions of Mark as distinct characters while remembering they are parts of one person. “It’s interesting because they’re the same guy, it’s just different parts or sections of the same person.” As the innie and outie develop increasingly separate interests, Scott said he plays them more distinctly without losing their shared personhood. His description is about acting and character construction, not a clinical explanation of the premise.
Scott also described Severance as a slow burn and said its long-form storytelling gives him room to work through Mark’s gradual journey. That is his view of the role and format, rather than a general claim about television.

Is Severance science fiction?
Yes: Erickson explicitly considers it science fiction, even though its restrained, recognizable workplace setting may not always feel conventionally futuristic. “I do consider the show science fiction, even though it doesn’t always feel like that,” he said.
Erickson named a range of influences rather than a single template. The Truman Show was a reference for people living inside a controlled bubble; his other named films and series included The Matrix, Dark City, Brazil, Being John Malkovich, The Office, Office Space, and The Conversation.

What those influences have in common
They offer useful ways to think about the show, not a ranking or a claim that it copies any one work. Some center on enclosed or controlled realities; others explore institutional power, divided identity or memory, or the uneasy comedy of work. Severance brings those concerns into a science-fiction story whose office can feel mundane precisely because its rules are so extreme.
Companion viewing: Erickson’s mention of The Truman Show makes it a natural companion for viewers interested in stories about people living inside a managed reality. It is one influence among several, not a required viewing prerequisite.

What the January 2025 season-two preview covered
The Ars Technica article was published January 31, 2025, after its author had watched the first six episodes of season two.
