As of a January 9, 2025 interview, Severance creator Dan Erickson said he had a final scene and an endpoint in mind. He also described the show’s season count as an internal, tentative discussion—not a confirmed plan.
Does Dan Erickson know how Severance ends?
Yes. In an interview published by io9 on January 9, 2025, Erickson said he had “a pretty solid idea of the endpoint of the show,” including a final scene that had long been in his mind and answers to some of the show’s major questions. The interview was conducted before season two premiered on January 17, 2025, so his comments describe his thinking at that point, not a later account of the series’ direction.

Having an endpoint in mind does not mean every plot detail is fixed. Erickson also said that characters, places, or story elements can surprise the creative team as the show develops. The picture he offered was of a destination with room for discovery along the way, rather than a fully predetermined route.
How many seasons does Erickson expect?
Erickson said he had an idea of the show’s length and that the team had discussed a season count they felt happy with. He immediately qualified that answer: it was “not like a hundred percent for sure,” and he did not reveal the number. The interview therefore supports saying that a possible run length had been discussed internally, but not that Severance had a publicly confirmed final season or total episode plan.

Could a third season arrive sooner?
Asked whether a third season could take less time than the gap between the first two, Erickson said he would like that and that it had been part of the conversations. That was a preference and a process goal, not a confirmed production timetable or release date. The interview gave no specific schedule for a possible third season.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the interview establishes—and what it doesn’t
- Established: Erickson said he had a strong sense of the endpoint, a final scene in mind, and answers to some major questions.
- Discussed, but not confirmed: An internal season-count idea that Erickson said was not completely certain; he did not name a number.
- Hoped for, not promised: A shorter wait for a possible third season.
- Not established by this interview: A final season count, a third-season release date, or a guaranteed production schedule.
These distinctions matter because the interview appeared just before season two’s premiere. It records what the creator said then; it should not be read as an update on any later renewal or release status. Read the original interview by Germain Lussier at io9.
