Spoilers for the ending of Seven (also styled Se7en). The box contains Tracy Mills’s severed head. John Doe sends it to make Detective David Mills kill him in a rage, turning Doe’s final plan into a tableau of the seven deadly sins.
What is in the box in Seven?
In the story, it is Tracy Mills’s severed head. The film does not show it. Instead, Somerset’s reaction and the dialogue make the revelation clear without a visual reveal.

Why does John Doe send the box?
The delivery is the final part of Doe’s design, not simply a last shock. Doe says he envied Mills’s ordinary life and killed Tracy; he then uses the box to provoke Mills into killing him. Doe casts himself as envy and Mills as wrath, completing his seven-sin tableau by making the detective participate in it.
Was there really a Gwyneth Paltrow head prop?
No prosthetic head was made for the scene, according to director David Fincher. In a January 2025 ComicBook.com report, Fincher recalled that the box held a seven- or eight-pound shot bag and a wig, with perhaps a little blood to make strands stick to tape. His recollection was approximate: he qualified those details with “I think.” He also explained the scene’s restraint this way: “you don’t need to see what’s in the box if you have Morgan Freeman.”

How did the released ending come about?
A January 2025 ComicBook.com account, citing screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker’s 2017 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, says the original bleak-ending script was the version sent to Fincher. Earlier director Jeremiah Chechik had sought a different ending. After Fincher learned what the original version contained, a revised draft was sent, and he declined it. This is reported production history, rather than a complete account of every studio or script-draft detail.
Are there alternate endings to watch?
A January 2025 report on the 4K UHD release lists an original “test” ending and animated storyboards for an unshot ending among the supplements, alongside commentaries and production material. These are supplementary materials, not a completed alternate cut of the film. The report said the anniversary 4K UHD edition released January 7, 2025; check the exact edition and territory listing if you are looking for those extras.

What changed in the 4K restoration?
The Associated Press reported in January 2025 that the restoration used an 8K scan as the source for 4K. Fincher said his aim was to correct technical defects while preserving the film’s content: “I’m very against the idea of changing any of the content.” The AP also reported a $34 million production budget and more than $327 million earned at the box office, not accounting for inflation.
