Send Help turns a plane-crash survival story into a dark workplace power struggle: an overlooked employee and her boss are stranded together, with old grievances following them onto the island. Sam Raimi directs Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien in a horror-comedy that pairs survival tension with grotesque, violent humor. The setup is more distinctive than a straightforward castaway thriller, though its appeal depends on how much you enjoy that tonal collision.

Linda Liddle (McAdams) and her boss, Bradley Preston (O’Brien), are the only survivors of a plane crash and find themselves stranded on a deserted island. The studio synopsis frames their immediate challenge as learning to work together despite past grievances; their relationship then develops into a battle of wills and wits. That makes the island more than a survival setting: it strips away the office hierarchy without erasing the resentment and power imbalance that shaped it.
The premise gives the film room to play with workplace and class dynamics while keeping its central conflict focused on two people. In a D23 interview published January 29, 2026, Raimi explained the value of that tight setup: “By setting the story on a deserted island with only two people, it allowed Damian and Mark to really get deep with these characters.”
Is Send Help scary or funny?
The studio categorizes the film as comedy, horror, and thriller, and rates it R. Its listed runtime is 1 hour 53 minutes. Those labels point to a deliberately mixed experience rather than a conventional survival drama: the danger and violence share space with comic excess.

Apple TV’s U.S. listing describes its rating rationale as “strong/bloody violence and language.” That is the platform’s displayed wording, not a separate rating-board quotation. The film’s gruesome humor may suit viewers who like horror that makes the violence part of the joke; those seeking restrained suspense or a realistic survival procedural may find the comic grotesquerie a poor fit.
What do McAdams and O’Brien bring to the conflict?
McAdams plays Linda, an overlooked employee at a consulting firm; O’Brien plays Bradley, her arrogant boss, according to D23. That contrast gives the leads a clear dynamic before the survival situation begins to rearrange their relative power. The story’s central question is not simply who can endure the island, but what happens when the person accustomed to having authority must rely on someone he has underestimated.

In The Atlantic, David Sims described the film as a “horror-comedy full of spirited, violent silliness” and interpreted it as a stripped-down class satire. He singled out McAdams’s movement from overlooked worker to capable survivor and Raimi’s grotesque comic excess. CinemaBlend’s review also highlights the film’s dark comedy, gore, gender and class dynamics, and McAdams’s performance. These are individual critical readings, not evidence of a universal critical consensus.
Is Send Help worth watching?
For viewers drawn to a strong two-person premise, the film’s most compelling hook is the collision between wilderness dependence and workplace resentment. The reversal of who holds power gives the survival story a satirical edge, while Raimi’s horror-comedy approach pushes it away from sober realism. If you want a grounded account of survival skills, the film’s emphasis on personality, power, and bloody comic escalation may not be what you are looking for.

As a spoiler-light recommendation, Send Help is best suited to viewers comfortable with R-rated violence and comedy that gets deliberately ugly. Its premise and performances give the conflict a clear center; whether the mix works for you will come down to your appetite for Raimi-style grotesquerie alongside the class satire.
