Peterson’s statements and the alternative theories presented in the series are claims—not a reversal of his conviction, which remains in force. The latest reported court update is that a San Mateo County judge denied his habeas petition in April 2026.
What Scott Peterson said in the prison interview
Speaking with series director Shareen Anderson, Peterson repeated his denial of involvement in Laci’s disappearance. NBC Bay Area quoted him saying, “I had nothing to do with Laci’s disappearance.” He also said he regretted not testifying at trial and was speaking now for his family. TIME quoted another line from the series: “Don’t trust me. Look at the evidence.” These are Peterson’s own statements, not independent verification of his account.
The interview was described in contemporaneous coverage as his first on-camera interview since 2003. The series also includes people associated with the defense, the investigation and the case.
What the documentary revisits
Face to Face with Scott Peterson presents a critical account of the original investigation and returns to a theory advanced by Peterson’s supporters: that Laci may have encountered burglars near the couple’s home. The Los Angeles Innocence Project also sought access to burglary-related evidence and additional DNA testing in its court filings. The theory has not been established as the explanation for Laci’s disappearance; it should be understood as an advocacy position and a subject explored by the series.

The documentary’s episodes include “The People v. Scott Peterson” and “Investigations, Appeals and Lingering Questions.” Its presentation of contested issues does not itself determine their evidentiary or legal status. The prosecution disputed the relevance and novelty of much of the material advanced in connection with the case.
Why Peterson was convicted—and what sentence he is serving
Laci Peterson disappeared from the couple’s Modesto, California, home on Christmas Eve 2002, when she was eight months pregnant. Months later, her body and that of the couple’s unborn son, Conner, were found in San Francisco Bay. Scott Peterson said he had gone fishing at Berkeley Marina. In 2004, he was convicted of murdering Laci and Conner.

The California Supreme Court later overturned Peterson’s death sentence. He is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole; the conviction remains in force. The Los Angeles Innocence Project, which later pursued discovery, testing and habeas claims on his behalf, is separate from the national Innocence Project.
What happened to Peterson’s latest habeas petition
In April 2026, San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Hill denied a habeas petition Peterson filed in 2025, which asserted 14 claims of new evidence. The Los Angeles Times reported that Hill assessed the purported evidence as material that “merely repeats and elaborates upon the same contested theories that existed at the time of trial.” That phrase describes the court’s assessment of the petition; it is not a standalone finding resolving every disputed factual issue in the case.

The Los Angeles Innocence Project’s deputy director criticized the decision. The competing positions should be kept distinct: the organization advanced claims about evidence, the court denied the petition, and the original conviction remains in effect. The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s May 2026 release also described the petition’s rejection.
