She was 23. Yolanda Saldívar, a former president of Selena’s fan club and manager of her boutiques, was convicted of first-degree murder that October and sentenced to life in prison. In March 2025, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles denied Saldívar parole; the Associated Press reported that her next review is scheduled for 2030.
What happened to Selena Quintanilla?
Selena went to Saldívar’s room at the Days Inn to retrieve business records she needed for a tax filing, according to the Associated Press. Saldívar shot her in the back with a .38-caliber revolver. Selena ran to the motel lobby, collapsed and was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead about an hour later. She was 23.
The AP’s account places the meeting in the context of a dispute over records and money. Saldívar had been fired after money was discovered missing, and the reported purpose of Selena’s visit was to recover business documents. That context does not, by itself, establish a broader motive beyond what was presented and determined in court.
Who was Yolanda Saldívar, and what was the legal outcome?
Saldívar had founded Selena’s fan club and managed the singer’s Selena Etc. clothing boutiques. A Houston jury convicted her of first-degree murder on October 23, 1995. She was sentenced to life in prison.

Was Yolanda Saldívar denied parole?
Yes. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles denied Saldívar’s parole request in March 2025. The Associated Press reported that her next review is set for March 2030. The board’s stated reasons, as quoted by AP, included that the offense showed “a conscious disregard for the lives, safety, or property of others” and that the panel considered her a continuing threat to public safety.
What does a parole review date mean?
A review date is not a release date. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice describes parole as a discretionary release that allows a person to serve the remainder of a sentence in the community under supervision. A review gives the board an opportunity to decide whether to grant parole; it does not guarantee release. TDCJ says a three-member panel votes on a review, and at least two members must agree for a final decision.
- Sentence: Life in prison, imposed after Saldívar’s 1995 conviction.
- Parole review: The board considers whether discretionary release is appropriate.
- Reported next review: March 2030, according to AP’s March 2025 report.
