Selena Gomez reportedly said she has small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), which flares up, after social-media users speculated about her appearance at the October 29, 2024, premiere of Emilia Pérez. The Los Angeles Times reported that she made the remarks in a TikTok comment that was later deleted.
What prompted Gomez’s response?
Gomez attended the American French Film Festival premiere of Emilia Pérez in Hollywood on October 29, 2024. After images from the event circulated online, some users speculated about her appearance and her pose, including her hands resting across her stomach. The Los Angeles Times reported on November 5 that Gomez responded in a comment beneath a TikTok post. The newspaper’s account was based on screenshots and reporting; the post was later deleted and is not available for independent verification.
What did she reportedly say?
The Los Angeles Times reproduced the comment as including these words: “This makes me sick.” It also quoted Gomez as saying, “It flares up. I don’t care that I don’t look like a sick [sic] figure. I don’t have that body. End of story,” followed by, “No I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.” The newspaper printed “sick [sic] figure” in that wording; these are reported quotations, not a transcript that can be checked against the unavailable original post. The Los Angeles Times report provides the attribution.
What is SIBO?
SIBO is short for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. E! News, citing the Mayo Clinic, describes it as an abnormal increase in the overall bacterial population in the small intestine, particularly bacteria not commonly found there. The Los Angeles Times also relays the Mayo Clinic’s general description that SIBO commonly occurs when an illness or circumstance such as surgery slows the movement of food and waste through the digestive tract. E! News and the Los Angeles Times offer basic context, not an account of Gomez’s individual medical care.

What the report does—and does not—establish
The November 2024 coverage documents a reported response to body-shaming speculation and attributes the statement that Gomez has SIBO and experiences flare-ups to her. It does not establish her treatment, prognosis, or current health status. A person’s appearance cannot confirm or rule out a medical condition, and the report is not a basis for diagnosing Gomez or anyone else.
