On January 27, 2025, Gomez posted a tearful video to Instagram amid immigration-enforcement actions by the Trump administration. ABC News reported that she said, “I just wanted to say that I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked, the children,” and expressed a wish to help. The video ended with her saying she would “try everything.” It was an emotional expression of sympathy, not a detailed policy proposal.
Parker then posted “Deport Selena Gomez,” ABC News reported. The Guardian also reported a post in which he called her a “descendant of Mexican illegals” and asked, “Maybe Selena should be deported, too?” Gomez replied in an Instagram Story: “Oh Mr. Parker, Mr. Parker. What is known about Gomez’s family history?
Gomez was born in Texas. In a 2019 first-person essay for TIME, she recounted that her aunt crossed from Mexico to the United States in the 1970s hidden in the back of a truck, and that her grandparents followed. She wrote that her father was born in Texas and that she was born a U.S. citizen in 1992. The Guardian also reported that her paternal grandparents later became U.S. citizens.
