The same release is commonly called SEGA Mega Drive Classics in Europe and on PlayStation storefronts. It adds features such as save states and rewind, but it is a curated selection rather than a complete Genesis library. Digital availability has since changed: SEGA announced that selected classics and bundles would be delisted beginning December 6, 2025, while games already owned remain in players’ libraries.
When did SEGA Genesis Classics launch, and what is it called?
The collection launched May 29, 2018, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. SEGA Europe Community Manager Ibrahim Bhatti announced the PS4 release date on March 14, 2018, describing the release as SEGA Mega Drive Classics. The regional and storefront naming differs: Xbox uses SEGA Genesis Classics, while Europe and PlayStation storefronts commonly use SEGA Mega Drive Classics. These names refer to the same compilation.

SEGA’s official descriptions call it a collection of “over 50” games. GamesBeat reported a precise count of 53 and a launch price of $30 in 2018; those figures describe the original release, not a current price or guarantee of present-day availability.

For online multiplayer, the current PlayStation Store listing says PlayStation Plus is required. The Xbox listing says online console multiplayer requires Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate. Check the relevant store page for current requirements in your region: PlayStation Store and Xbox.
Can you still buy SEGA Genesis Classics?
Availability depends on platform and region. SEGA Support’s notice, updated November 19, 2025, said selected classic games and bundles would become unavailable for new purchase beginning December 6, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. PST. Its list included the Mega Drive and Genesis Classic Bundle on Steam and SEGA Mega Drive Classics for Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation. A store page being visible does not necessarily mean a new purchase can be completed in every country, so check your local storefront before buying.

SEGA’s 2018 launch material also described physical PS4 and Xbox One editions. That confirms physical copies existed at launch; it does not establish present-day retailer stock, condition or price. If considering a used copy, verify the edition, region, seller and condition before purchase.
