The 2025 Emmys red carpet split the difference between classic awards glamour and deliberate fashion risk. Jenna Ortega’s jewel-like Givenchy, Selena Gomez’s saturated red Louis Vuitton, and Colman Domingo’s crystal-embellished Valentino were the clearest expressions of the night’s range.
The strongest looks on the 2025 Emmys red carpet were not all chasing the same idea of glamour. Jenna Ortega brought gothic, jewel-like couture; Selena Gomez made a case for saturated red and classic polish; and Colman Domingo treated a powder-blue suit as a canvas for eveningwear-level embellishment. Around them, stars including Sydney Sweeney, Chloë Sevigny, Hunter Schafer, Cate Blanchett, and Pedro Pascal showed how far formal dressing can stretch without losing its occasion-ready impact.
This is an editorial selection, not an official award. Some of these looks appeared in more than one major best-dressed roundup, while the ranking and emphasis here reflect the visual qualities that made each outfit memorable.
What happened at the 2025 Emmys
The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards took place on September 14, 2025, at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. CBS broadcast the ceremony, hosted by Nate Bargatze. The red carpet balanced familiar awards-season glamour with more disruptive choices in construction, color, texture, and tailoring.

1. Jenna Ortega: gothic glamour with a sculptural edge
Jenna Ortega made one of the evening’s most distinctive entrances in Givenchy by Sarah Burton, styled with Pomellato jewelry. Vanity Fair identified the designer as Givenchy by Sarah Burton, while Vogue and the Los Angeles Times also emphasized the look’s jewelry-like construction.
The effect came from the tension between the dark skirt and the exposed, bejeweled bodice. Rather than treating sparkle as a surface decoration, the look made jewels and pearls part of the architecture of the outfit. It was sheer, sculptural, and deliberately gothic without becoming costume-like. That combination helps explain why Ortega was repeatedly singled out in coverage of the carpet: the dress had a clear point of view from every angle.
2. Selena Gomez: the red gown perfected
Selena Gomez wore a custom Louis Vuitton gown with Tiffany & Co. jewelry. The red, high-neck column silhouette was restrained through the bodice and neckline, then expanded into a sweeping train that supplied the drama.
Gomez’s look worked because it did not overcomplicate the central idea. The saturated red color provided immediate impact, while the controlled neckline and clean column shape kept the result elegant rather than busy. Vogue also highlighted Gomez and Benny Blanco as one of the evening’s strongest couples, but the gown held its own as a piece of red-carpet dressing: recognizable, cinematic glamour executed with precision.
3. Colman Domingo: powder blue, crystal detail, and exact tailoring
Colman Domingo’s Valentino suit, worn with Omega, was among the night’s best menswear statements. Its powder-blue color relaxed the traditional formality of the suit, while crystal embroidery added the kind of surface detail more often associated with couture gowns or jewelry.
The appeal was the balance. The color was soft, but the tailoring remained precise; the embellishment was visible, but it did not overwhelm the silhouette. Domingo demonstrated that a formal suit does not have to be black or conventionally austere to look serious. The crystals supplied evening polish, while the pale blue kept the outfit fresh.
4. Sydney Sweeney: unapologetic red satin
Sydney Sweeney appeared in Oscar de la Renta, wearing a red satin dress that the Los Angeles Times highlighted as a standout and Vanity Fair included among its best-dressed selections.

Where Gomez used red through a column gown and train, Sweeney’s satin brought a different kind of glamour: liquid shine, strong color, and the unmistakable visual richness of evening fabric. It was a reminder that a red-carpet look can be memorable without an unusual cutout or experimental construction. Sometimes the commitment to a classic material and an unabashed color is the statement.
5. Chloë Sevigny: a modern version of Old Hollywood
Chloë Sevigny wore a black Saint Laurent gown with Tiffany & Co. jewelry. Vogue described the look as a subversion of Old Hollywood style, and Vanity Fair also selected it.
black gowns are familiar territory, but Sevigny’s styling and attitude prevented the look from reading as generic. The proportions gave the classic Hollywood vocabulary a sharper, more contemporary character. The result was less about spectacle than control: a reminder that a simple color can still feel directional when the shape and styling are exact.
6. Hunter Schafer: saturated color with expressive shape
Hunter Schafer wore McQueen in a vivid magenta gown. Vogue included Schafer in its best-dressed gallery, while the Los Angeles Times also drew attention to the color.
Magenta offered a welcome alternative to the dominant black, red, and pale tailoring stories on the carpet. In Schafer’s look, color was not an afterthought; it was the organizing principle. The expressive shape and saturated finish made the outfit feel fashion-forward without depending on the safe language of neutral eveningwear.
7. Cate Blanchett: formal power in a black pantsuit
Cate Blanchett wore Armani Privé. The Los Angeles Times described the outfit as a commanding black pantsuit, and Vogue included it in its best-dressed coverage.
Blanchett supplied one of the clearest counterarguments to the idea that a major ceremony requires a gown. The impact came from architectural tailoring, strong proportion, and the authority of a sharply constructed black look. It was formal because of its design discipline, not because it followed the usual skirt-and-train formula.
8. Pedro Pascal: the all-white tuxedo
Pedro Pascal wore Celine in an all-white tuxedo, according to the Los Angeles Times. Vogue and Vanity Fair both identified the fashion house.

White tailoring can easily look too stark or too summery, but it was part of a broader pale-menswear conversation on this carpet. Pascal’s look made the contrast with traditional black-tie dressing its central feature. It was clean, confident, and immediately legible in photographs—proof that a tuxedo can stand out through color alone when the fit and styling are controlled.

The defining 2025 Emmys red-carpet trends
Red remained the most reliable form of drama
Gomez and Sweeney showed two different routes to red-carpet impact through red: Gomez’s controlled column gown and train, and Sweeney’s high-shine satin. The color was familiar, but the fabric, silhouette, and styling kept the results distinct.
Jewelry became part of the construction
Ortega’s Givenchy look pushed this idea furthest, while crystal embellishment on Domingo’s Valentino suit showed how jewel-like detail can transform tailoring. The broader effect was a move away from treating jewelry as an accessory added at the end. In the most memorable looks, shine and ornament helped define the garment itself.
Menswear moved beyond the standard black tuxedo
Domingo’s powder blue and Pascal’s white tuxedo represented different versions of the same shift: formal menswear could be expressive through color and surface detail while remaining polished. The Washington Post described a wider range that included gleaming white suits, playful tuxedos, sweater suits, conventional tuxedos, and unusual separates. That range suggests a lively carpet rather than a single quantified trend.
Tailoring provided a genuine alternative to the gown
Blanchett’s Armani Privé pantsuit made formal authority look architectural. The evening’s fashion conversation also included fashion-forward suiting more broadly, reinforcing that a strong shoulder, carefully calibrated proportion, or unusual finish can provide as much ceremony as a train.

Classic glamour worked best when it had a point of view
The carpet did not reject familiar red-carpet codes. Red gowns, black eveningwear, white tuxedos, and polished embellishment all remained central. What separated the strongest looks was the added decision: Ortega’s gothic jewel construction, Gomez’s saturated red and sweeping train, Sevigny’s Old Hollywood subversion, or Domingo’s crystal-covered powder-blue tailoring.

- For Gomez’s approach: choose one saturated color and keep the neckline and accessories controlled. Let the train, drape, or fabric provide the drama.
- For Ortega’s approach: look for texture that functions as structure—beading, pearls, mesh, or sculptural embellishment—rather than adding sparkle everywhere.
- For Domingo’s approach: try a nontraditional suit color, then keep the tailoring clean. One highly reflective detail can replace a conventional tuxedo’s formal restraint.
- For Sevigny’s approach: start with a black gown or column silhouette, then modernize it through proportion, neckline, or styling rather than piling on accessories.
- For Blanchett’s approach: consider a sharply tailored evening suit, especially when you want ceremony without a skirt or train.
- For Pascal’s approach: a white or pale dinner jacket creates contrast on a formal occasion, but fit, shirt coordination, and clean finishing matter more than novelty.
Where to view the official red-carpet photography

The 2025 Emmys red carpet succeeded because it allowed recognizable glamour and fashion experimentation to coexist. The most memorable outfits were not necessarily the loudest. They were the ones that added a decisive idea—through construction, color, texture, jewelry, or tailoring—to a familiar formalwear foundation.
