Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott’s New York City apartment turns maximalism into a considered whole: colorful patterns and antiques sit alongside custom plasterwork, millwork and furnishings, while technology is tucked out of sight. With interior designer Young Huh, the couple reshaped the entry, kitchen, living spaces, three terraces and bedroom around how they want to entertain and live.
A foyer designed to set the tone
The apartment announces its personality at the entrance. Deschanel says she fell in love with the printed floral mural by Ixel. Scott says the original foyer ceiling was less than eight feet high and was raised during the renovation; the tour gives no final ceiling measurement. Custom crown and plaster details and reproduction lanterns complete the entry. Architectural Digest’s October 23, 2025 roundup also singles out the raised ceiling and multicolored floral wallpaper.
A kitchen opened up for entertaining
The couple describes the original kitchen as a small, closet-like space. The redesign gives cooking and hosting more room to coexist: custom millwork and storage organize the kitchen, while a coffee station and panel-ready appliances contribute to a more integrated look. Deschanel identifies the range as ILVE and says they changed from gas to induction. She also praises JennAir’s appliance design; the tour does not offer independent performance comparisons or name an exact range model.

The room’s design supports that idea by keeping the hosts connected with guests rather than isolating cooking from the gathering.

Living and family rooms: color, antiques and hidden screens
A living room made to be used
The living room is intended to feel comfortable rather than formal. Deschanel’s enthusiasm for combining prints and colors is balanced by choices that give the mix coherence: the couple discusses coordinating fabrics and patterns, a custom rug and architectural details rather than treating each surface as a separate statement. A screen hidden in the ceiling preserves the room’s appearance when they are not watching something. “I also don’t like to see a TV in a living room,” Deschanel says. The tour also mentions a concealed karaoke setup.
A family room for movies and music
In the family room, a fireplace was added against a wall that had been brick, with custom work designed to make the addition feel as though it belonged there all along. A movie screen is concealed in this room, too. Vintage sconces and antique pieces bring older details into the renovated space, while the couple says a piano is there for sing-alongs.

Three terraces with an English-garden feel
The couple describes three private terraces that were previously exposed. Their redesign brought in custom-planned tile, greenery, ironwork and plantings to create the atmosphere they wanted: an English garden. The tour does not establish terrace dimensions, orientation or the plants’ species, so the look is best understood through the materials and garden character the couple describes.

A calmer bedroom and coordinated bathroom
The primary bedroom shifts from the home’s more exuberant public rooms to a quieter palette of blue tones. Those colors continue into the bathroom, where the wall tile is credited to Huh’s collection. Tall marble-look panels echo the bedroom’s paneling, linking the rooms through finish and color instead of repeating the living areas’ bolder pattern mix. The tour briefly mentions a Scott Living mattress but provides no model information or product assessment.

What makes the maximalism feel intentional
Deschanel describes her preference plainly: “I love, like, maximalist design, and, like, I love being able to mix a lot of prints and colors and things together.” The apartment’s design shows how that instinct can be given structure. Custom plaster, crown details and millwork make the architecture part of the composition; custom furnishings and a rug support the rooms’ particular uses; antiques and vintage lighting add history; and hidden screens keep technology from competing with the decor.
The result is not a uniform look in every room. The entertaining spaces carry more color and pattern, while the bedroom and bathroom use a more restrained blue-and-stone palette. That variation lets the apartment feel layered without requiring every room to make the same visual statement.

What the tour confirms—and what it doesn’t
The Architectural Digest Open Door tour is the source for the couple’s descriptions of the rooms and renovation choices. Architectural Digest’s associated shopping page is a curated product assortment, not an inventory of the apartment. Its KitchenAid stand mixer, wallpaper, lighting and other listings should not be taken as confirmed items in the home unless the tour separately identifies them. The page also discloses that Architectural Digest may earn a portion of sales through retailer affiliate partnerships.
The tour does not establish an exact address, apartment size, renovation budget, project timeline or construction duration. Its value is in the room-by-room account: a raised, muralled entry; a kitchen reworked for hosting; flexible living spaces with concealed technology; garden-like terraces; and a calmer private suite.
