Barack Obama briefly rapped a line from Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” at a Kamala Harris campaign rally in Detroit on Oct. 22, 2024, after Eminem introduced him. The moment was a short, playful part of a political event—not a standalone performance.
What happened at the Detroit rally?
Eminem spoke at the rally in his hometown, urging people to use their voices and vote. He then introduced Obama, who took the stage as “Lose Yourself” played. The Associated Press reported that the event was held in support of Harris’s presidential campaign, days before early voting was due to begin in Michigan.
Obama opened by joking that he felt unusually nervous after Eminem’s introduction. His “palms are sweaty” remark echoed the song’s opening, and he briefly rapped an adapted passage before expressing affection for the rapper. The Washington Post reported his closing words as: “Love, love me some Eminem.”
Why did Obama say “palms are sweaty”?
It was a reference to “Lose Yourself,” Eminem’s 2002 song from the film 8 Mile. By echoing its familiar opening phrase, Obama made a quick joke about being nervous in front of the rapper and signaled the song connection without turning the appearance into a full performance.
