How the judging panels changed
The original Fox panel
Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, and Randy Jackson formed the original panel. Their departures did not happen together: Abdul’s listed run ended after season 8, Cowell’s after season 9, and Jackson continued through season 12.
New judges and changing lineups
Kara DioGuardi joined for seasons 8 and 9, and Ellen DeGeneres served in season 9. Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler judged seasons 10 and 11. In season 12, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj joined Keith Urban; Urban remained through season 15. Harry Connick Jr. joined Lopez and Urban for seasons 13–15.

ABC’s revival and Underwood’s addition
ABC announced Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie as the revival’s first panel in 2017, ahead of the season that premiered in 2018. ABC’s announcement quoted Richie saying he felt his experience as a singer, songwriter, and producer could bring a great deal to the table.
ABC announced Underwood’s appointment on August 1, 2024, for the franchise’s 23rd season. Underwood had won season four. Showrunner and executive producer Megan Wolflick called her “the first ‘American Idol’ alum ever to join the judging panel.” ABC’s announcement identifies her as joining Bryan and Richie.
