How to check a viral claim about an investigation
- Identify who is making the claim. A post or video repeating an allegation is not the same as a named authority announcing a finding.
- Look for the underlying record. Check whether a court filing, agency statement, or released investigative document actually says what the post claims.
- Compare with reporting on the records. Reputable coverage can help establish what public materials contain, while remaining limited to the records and sources it describes.
- Keep the conclusion within the evidence. “Not documented in these sources” is different from “proved impossible” or “proved not to exist.”
