Johansson later said she never put a label on the relationship, and the contemporaneous report announcing their split gave no reason for it.
Were Sean Penn and Scarlett Johansson together?
Yes. In remarks from a Vogue interview reported by CBS and the Associated Press on April 12, 2012, Johansson said: “We spent time together, yeah. I never put a title on it, really, but we were seeing each other.” Her wording acknowledges that they dated while making clear she did not describe it as a formally labeled relationship.
Reports linked them in March 2011, including accounts of a trip to Mexico and their reported attendance at Reese Witherspoon’s wedding. On May 2, CBS reported that photographers had captured them holding hands outside a White House Correspondents’ Dinner after-party in Washington. These accounts document public reports and sightings, rather than a formal announcement by the pair.
How long did they date?
A November 21, 2011 Vanity Fair profile described the relationship as lasting five months. That is the duration reported by the magazine; Johansson herself later described them as seeing each other without assigning the relationship a title.

Why did Sean Penn and Scarlett Johansson break up?
The reason was not publicly established in the cited reporting. On June 3, 2011, CBS reported that they were no longer dating, attributing the update to an unnamed source who had spoken to People. The report did not explain why they split.
Neither Johansson’s later remarks nor the contemporaneous breakup report identifies commitment issues as the cause. The claim that they broke up for that reason should therefore be treated as unverified, not as a confirmed account of either person’s private motives.
