She told jurors that she witnessed Combs assault Cassie Ventura, including during an alleged 2009 incident at Combs’s Los Angeles home. Her account was testimony, not a jury finding about each event she described; the defense disputed her recollection and credibility.
What Dawn Richard said she witnessed
Richard, a singer who performed in Danity Kane and Diddy–Dirty Money, told jurors she was at Combs’s Los Angeles home recording music when she saw him attack Ventura in 2009. Reports of her testimony describe the episode with some differences. CBS said Richard testified that Ventura was cooking breakfast when Combs came downstairs asking where his eggs were; Richard saw him grab a skillet and move to hit Ventura before Ventura fell, after which Combs punched and kicked her. The Associated Press separately reported Richard’s account that Combs came downstairs screaming and beat Ventura on the ground. These are descriptions of Richard’s testimony, not adjudicated findings. (CBS News; Associated Press)
Richard also testified that Combs discussed the incident the following day with her and others, characterizing it as something people in relationships do. She said he later threatened her and another person to keep them quiet. The Guardian reported Richard’s account of his words: “people go missing if they say things like that, if they talk.” CBS reported that Richard understood the remark as a death threat, while the defense emphasized that she had not mentioned it in several earlier interviews. Her account of other alleged violence
On May 19, Richard testified that she had frequently seen Combs behave violently toward Ventura and had observed visible injuries. The Guardian quoted her testimony: “Frequently, he would punch her, choke her, slap her in the mouth,” and “I saw him kick her, punch her in the stomach.” Those statements are Richard’s account under oath, as reported from court. How the defense challenged her testimony
Defense lawyers argued that Richard’s account was inconsistent and that her lawsuit against Combs gave her a motive to testify against him. During cross-examination, they raised differences between her courtroom description of the skillet incident and the account in her September 2024 civil complaint. They also questioned when she first described the alleged threat. These were defense arguments; the available reporting does not establish that the defense proved fabrication or that every allegation was independently established in the criminal trial. Richard had worked with Combs from 2004 to 2012, first as a member of Danity Kane, formed through his MTV show Making the Band, and later in Diddy–Dirty Money. Her prior professional relationship is relevant context, but it does not by itself resolve the competing claims about her credibility. (U.S. District Court opinion)

What happened in Richard’s civil lawsuit
Richard filed a civil lawsuit against Combs in 2024. On June 12, 2026, U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla dismissed Counts Two through Eighteen with prejudice and Count One without prejudice to refiling in state court, and ordered the federal case closed. The judge wrote: “The Court’s resolution of the instant motion exists independently of its disapprobation of the factual allegations, which, if true, are execrable.” The ruling was a procedural disposition of the civil claims; it should not be treated as a finding that Richard’s trial testimony was either true or false. The Associated Press reported that Richard’s lawyer, Arick Fudali, said she intended to refile the primary claim under the state gender-motivated violence act. That report describes an intention, not confirmation that a state-court filing was made. (Associated Press)

How her testimony fits the criminal verdict
The jury later convicted Combs on prostitution-related charges and acquitted him of the more serious sex-trafficking charges. Those verdicts addressed the criminal counts before the jury; they were not a separate jury determination of every incident Richard recounted. (Associated Press)
