Netflix and director Alexandria Stapleton say the filmmakers obtained the material legally and had the necessary rights. The competing accounts have not been resolved by a court, and the sources available do not establish the footage’s chain of custody.
What Combs says Netflix got wrong
On December 1, 2025, a spokesperson for Combs criticized the series and Netflix’s decision to make Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson an executive producer. The spokesperson called it a “shameful hit piece” and said a teaser confirmed that Netflix relied on “stolen footage that was never authorized for release.” Those are allegations and characterizations from Combs’ side, not established findings.

The objection also focused on Jackson, whom Combs’ spokesperson described as a longtime adversary. The dispute therefore concerns both the footage’s provenance and Combs’ objection to the role of a prominent critic in the production.
Netflix and the filmmakers’ response
Director Alexandria Stapleton told Netflix Tudum: “It came to us, we obtained the footage legally and have the necessary rights.” She said the filmmakers repeatedly sought an interview and comment from Combs’ legal team but did not hear back.

Netflix said footage of Combs before his indictment and arrest was legally obtained and rejected the idea that the series was made as an act of retribution. The company also said Jackson was an executive producer but had no creative control, and that participants were not paid. These statements describe Netflix’s position; they do not independently establish how the footage changed hands.
What Combs’ later countersuit alleges
In a report published August 12, 2026, TheWrap described a countersuit by Combs against Rodney Jones. According to the filing as reported, Combs alleges that during a 2022 trip to St. Barths, Jones accessed another videographer’s workstation and stole drives containing footage intended for a Combs documentary. Combs further alleges that the material was later used in the Netflix series.

The countersuit also accuses Jones of defamation based on statements in the documentary. TheWrap’s report said Jones’ response was not available at the time and that representatives for Combs and Jones had not immediately responded to requests for comment. The allegations in a filing are not a court’s determination of what happened.
What is known—and what remains unsettled
The accounts make different claims about the material’s provenance and authorization:
Rank #3
| Issue | Combs’ account | Netflix and filmmakers’ account |
|---|---|---|
| How the footage was obtained | Combs alleges in his 2026 countersuit that Jones stole drives containing footage during a 2022 trip and that the material later appeared in the series. | Netflix says the footage was legally obtained; Stapleton says the filmmakers received it legally. |
| Whether its use was authorized | Combs’ spokesperson said the footage was never authorized for release. | Stapleton says the filmmakers had the necessary rights. |
| Who controlled the production | Combs’ spokesperson objected to Jackson’s executive-producer role, citing his status as a longtime adversary. | Netflix says Jackson had no creative control. |
The sources reporting this dispute do not document a rights transfer or establish the footage’s chain of custody. They also do not report a judicial ruling resolving whether the material was stolen, who owned it, or whether its use was authorized. Until those questions are resolved with evidence or in court, “stolen footage” should be understood as Combs’ allegation, not a proven fact.
