What is Psyche Running?
It is a selection of more than one hundred poems from nine of Grünbein’s collections published after Ashes for Breakfast. The poems were written in German; Leeder translated them into English. Seagull Books describes the collection as moving from an ironic engagement with classical subjects toward elegiac explorations of history, fragments of dreams, and existential unease. That description offers a sense of its range rather than a single plot or continuous narrative.
The Griffin judges’ citation calls the book “a brilliant overview and selection” and says Leeder’s translations establish “a new version of Grünbein in English: universal, lyrical, philosophical.” These are the judges’ assessments, not a claim that the collection has one definitive interpretation.

What did the Griffin Prize award—and how was it divided?
For 2025, the Griffin Poetry Prize awarded C$130,000 for the international prize, with the organizer stating that 60% goes to the translator and 40% to the original author. On that basis, Leeder’s share is C$78,000 and Grünbein’s is C$52,000. The organizer also said each of the other finalists received C$10,000.
Rank #3
The Griffin Poetry Prize was founded in 2000. Its remit covers first-edition poetry books written in or translated into English and submitted from anywhere in the world. The award is therefore not described as a prize for the translator alone or the author alone: its stated split recognizes both roles.
How competitive was the 2025 prize?
The organizer reported that the 2025 judges read 578 books of poetry, including 47 translations from 20 languages. Submissions came from 219 publishers in 17 countries. These are figures for the 2025 prize cycle, not annual averages.
