Scott Weiland, Stone Temple Pilots’ original frontman and later a member of Velvet Revolver, died at 48 on Dec. 3, 2015, in Bloomington, Minnesota. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later ruled his death an accidental overdose involving cocaine, alcohol and MDA.
What was Scott Weiland’s cause of death?
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner determined that Weiland died from an accidental overdose involving cocaine, alcohol and MDA, according to the Los Angeles Times’ report on the findings, published Dec. 18, 2015. The medical examiner also listed atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, asthma and multi-substance dependence as significant contributing conditions.
That determination is distinct from the early reports about the circumstances of his death. ABC News reported that police responded to a hotel in Bloomington at 8:22 p.m. on Dec. 3, while Weiland was touring with his band, the Wildabouts. The later medical-examiner finding established the cause; the initial reports did not.
Who was Scott Weiland?
Weiland was best known as the singer of Stone Temple Pilots (STP), the California rock band whose debut album, Core, arrived in 1992. The Guardian reported that Core reached No. 3 in the United States, that all six of the band’s albums reached the U.S. top ten, and that STP won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance for “Plush.”

Remembering the person as well as the performer
Weiland was born Scott Kline in Santa Cruz on Oct. 27, 1967, according to the Los Angeles Times obituary; he later adopted the Weiland surname after his mother remarried. In a 1998 interview with the paper, he described songwriting as his work: “I used to feel guilty about my success, but I’m over that now,” he said. “It’s like, hey, some people cook for a living and some people milk cows. I write songs.”
After his death, Weiland’s former wife, Mary Forsberg Weiland, urged the public not to let his talent eclipse the reality of addiction. In a letter quoted by the Los Angeles Times, she wrote: “We don’t want to downplay Scott’s amazing talent, presence or his ability to light up any stage with brilliant electricity. So many people have been gracious enough to praise his gift. The music is here to stay. But at some point, someone needs to step up and point out that, yes, this will happen again — because as a society we almost encourage it.” Her words hold space for his musical legacy while resisting the idea that a death from addiction should become entertainment.
