After a third reported brain-tumor diagnosis in 2016, he chose observation instead of another operation. In 2024, he said he was at peace with not checking it again unless he developed symptoms, while describing targeted radiation as a possible option if the tumor became a threat. His account is personal, not a recommendation for other patients.
How Hamilton’s tumor history unfolded
- 1997: Hamilton was treated for testicular cancer, an earlier serious illness he has discussed publicly. AARP’s 2018 interview and The ASCO Post’s 2018 account cover his history.
- 2004: He first heard the words “brain tumor,” according to AARP. The ASCO Post describes this as his first brain-tumor operation.
- 2010: The tumor returned and Hamilton had another operation. A 2024 account says an artery was injured during that operation and an aneurysm led to additional surgeries; that complication detail is reported by E! News.
- 2016: His representative confirmed a recurrence, discovered at a routine checkup when Hamilton had no symptoms. Contemporary reports called it a benign brain tumor and also used the term “pituitary tumor.” ABC News reported the recurrence; CBN News used the pituitary-tumor label.
The phrase “third brain tumor” refers to the third reported occurrence or diagnosis in this series, following the accounts of 2004 and 2010—not three simultaneous tumors.
Why he chose observation after the 2016 diagnosis
Hamilton’s 2018 first-person account said he opted for a “wait-and-watch” approach rather than another operation. He reported that an MRI initially showed no growth, a later scan showed shrinkage by about half, and a December 2017 scan showed further shrinkage. He also said he expected the tumor could grow again. These are Hamilton’s descriptions of his scans, not independently reviewed imaging. The ASCO Post published his account.
In a separate 2018 interview, he said the tumor was not growing and that he was keeping an eye on it. He also mentioned drinking high-pH water, eliminating sugar, sleeping well and exercising. Those were personal choices; the accounts do not establish that they caused the scan changes or treated the tumor. AARP reported those details.

What Hamilton said about treatment in 2024
E! News, summarizing a People interview, reported that the tumor grew again before the COVID-19 pandemic. Hamilton said a surgeon had told him another operation was possible but complicated. He did not want to go through surgery again. He also described targeted radiation as a possible option if the tumor posed a threat, rather than saying that all future treatment was off the table.
“I’m totally at peace with not even looking at it again unless I become symptomatic.”

That statement captures the threshold he described in 2024: he did not want further monitoring unless symptoms arose. It does not establish what he or his doctors would choose in a changed situation. E! News reported his remarks.
How the tumor labels and scan figures should be read
Contemporaneous 2016 coverage described a benign brain tumor and used “pituitary tumor.” In a 2024 account recounting a later interview, Hamilton called the recurring tumor a craniopharyngioma. The cited reports do not reconcile those labels through a medical record or treating clinician, so they should be understood as terms used in separate accounts, not as independently verified interchangeable diagnoses.

CBN’s 2024 story also attributed more specific scan figures to Hamilton: 45% shrinkage and a further 25% shrinkage. The 2018 first-person account described shrinkage “by about half” and additional shrinkage on a later scan. All are personal scan results as reported by Hamilton, not independently verified measurements or population statistics. CBN News reported the later figures.

Hamilton’s experience documents the options described in his own case: observation, a repeat operation he was told would be complicated, and targeted radiation as a possible future path. The cited coverage does not provide a clinical comparison of those approaches, their risks, their likely effectiveness, or which patients might be eligible. His choice is not medical guidance for someone else facing a brain tumor.

The latest account cited here is from 2024. It does not verify Hamilton’s medical status in October 2026, so no current clinical update can be inferred from his earlier statements.
