School Spirits Season 3 is complete. The eight-episode season premiered on Paramount+ on January 28, 2026, released three episodes on its first day, and concluded with Dawn of the Deb on March 4, 2026. The story begins after Maddie Nears is reunited with her physical body while Simon Elroy is trapped in the school’s spirit realm. Maddie, her ghostly friends, and the living students must find a way to bring Simon home while uncovering why Split River High has become such a dangerous weak point between life and death.
The season expands the mythology with a hidden realm beneath the school, the history of a devastating 1912 flood, and the truth about the entity connected to Alfred Van Heidt. It also ends on a major cliffhanger involving Sandra Nears. Paramount+ has renewed School Spirits for Season 4, but no premiere date, episode count, complete cast list, or official Season 4 story has been announced.

What is School Spirits Season 3 about?
Season 3 reverses the rescue mission that drove much of the earlier story. Maddie is no longer simply trying to understand her death or return to the living world: her spirit has been reunited with her body. Simon, however, is left behind in the limbo-like realm connected to Split River High.

Simon remains physically alive and can bleed, but he cannot leave the spirit realm or interact with most living people normally. Maddie and the ghosts therefore commit to rescuing him and finding a route back to ordinary life. The problem is that the school’s supernatural geography is becoming more unstable at the same time.
As Maddie, Simon, Nicole, Claire, Xavier, and the spirits investigate, they uncover a deeper realm beneath the school. It resembles an old, flooded chapel and appears to be an especially thin point between the living world and the afterlife. Mr. Martin’s concealed history becomes central to understanding that place, while Superintendent Dr. Deborah Hunter-Price supports a plan to demolish Split River High and replace it with a new building.
For the spirits, demolition is not merely a construction project. The school appears to anchor their existence and their connection to one another. Destroying it could sever that connection, alter the barrier between worlds, or make it impossible for Simon to get home.

Season 3 story: the major developments
Simon becomes the person who needs rescuing
At the end of Season 2, Maddie’s spirit is reunited with her physical body, but Simon is stranded in the spirit realm. Season 3 follows the consequences of that exchange. Simon is not a ghost in the ordinary sense: he is still alive, can bleed, and remains tied to his body, yet he cannot return to the living world by normal means.

Janet’s attempt to use the glowing door in her scar does not immediately free Simon. Instead, it reinforces the group’s need for Mr. Martin. Simon argues that Martin must be released because his knowledge of the school’s supernatural history may be the key to understanding the doors, the scars, and the route between realms.

The realm beneath Split River High
The characters discover a hidden space beneath the school that looks like an old, flooded chapel. It functions like a deeper scar: a place formed around collective trauma and death, but one with a particularly strong connection to the boundary between worlds.
Mr. Martin links the realm to a 1912 church flood in which eight children and one adult died. The discovery changes the meaning of Split River High’s ghost population. The school is not simply haunted by unrelated deaths across different decades. It appears to have been built on a site where the barrier between life and death was already unusually weak.
The pastor is not the monster the characters expect
The milky-eyed figure in the deeper realm initially appears to be Alfred Van Heidt, the early-20th-century town power broker believed to have trapped the children in the church. Season 3 ultimately reveals that the figure is actually the church pastor, who tried to save the children during the flood.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The pastor is associated with the eight children but is presented as a benevolent presence rather than a demonic one. That distinction matters because the season’s real antagonist is not the figure who first appears most frightening. The larger threat is Van Heidt and his ability to manipulate living bodies and exploit the boundary between worlds.
Van Heidt’s body-hopping history
Van Heidt escaped the church-related purgatory by using Ralph, a boy connected to Mr. Martin’s childhood guilt, as a vessel. In the modern era, Van Heidt takes control of Kyle’s body and later operates through the identity of KC Jensen, a powerful local figure involved in funding the school’s demolition.
Kyle eventually reclaims his body after Van Heidt is forced out. The body-hopping reveal also explains why the season’s threat cannot be contained simply by confronting one physical villain. Van Heidt can change hosts, hide behind other people’s identities, and use local power to attack the school from the living side.
The demolition plan becomes an existential threat
Dr. Hunter-Price’s proposal to demolish Split River High creates a deadline for the supernatural investigation. The school’s destruction could damage the ghosts’ connection to the site or permanently change the passage between the living and dead.

Maddie, Nicole, Claire, Xavier, and the spirits therefore have two goals: preserve the school long enough to understand what is happening and find a way to return Simon. Their investigation ultimately collides with Van Heidt’s own plan to destroy the building.
Spoilers: School Spirits Season 3 finale explained
What happens in the liminal forest?
Maddie enters a liminal forest through the glowing door associated with her scar. There she finds Dawn and Wally, but Wally is trapped inside an idealized memory of his high-school life.
The forest’s mirrors preserve comforting memories while gradually erasing a person’s awareness of who they are and what they are trying to accomplish. Wally’s pleasant version of the past is therefore dangerous: the longer he remains inside it, the more likely he is to lose his present identity. Maddie and Dawn pull him back before that happens.
They later find Janet and Simon. Simon is in a blank, dissociative state, fixated on a memory of his mother, who died while giving birth to him. Maddie reaches him through a shared movie-night memory, giving Simon an emotional connection to the present that helps him break out of the fugue state.
Even after Simon comes back to himself, the group cannot immediately find the doors that would return them to the ordinary world. The finale treats the forest as more than a temporary waiting room: it can trap people inside memories and leave them unable to remember why they need to escape.
What happens to Maddie’s body?
While Maddie’s spirit is in the liminal realm, her body moves on autopilot and is taken to the hospital. Xavier receives help from Maddie’s deceased father, Dave, and from the hospital ghosts. Together, they try to keep Maddie’s body from being taken over.
Dave eventually uses his own door to create a route that helps Maddie and Simon return. Simon’s return is the clearest immediate outcome: he wakes in the living world and is once again able to act physically.

The precise status of the wider forest group remains unresolved. The finale leaves questions about whether Dawn, Janet, Wally, and Dave can escape, and about the full cost of using the doors. The important distinction is that Simon is definitively back in the living world, while the larger supernatural rescue is not fully settled.
How does the school fire start?
Van Heidt possesses Hunter-Price and attempts to destroy Split River High. He sets a fire and locks people inside the library, turning the demolition conflict into an immediate life-or-death emergency.
The fire also breaches the veil between the worlds. That allows the ghosts to affect events more directly than usual. Quinn and Rhonda become briefly visible enough to warn the people trapped in the library, while the other spirits are able to influence the fire.
Rank #4
The school largely survives the immediate blaze, but it is not restored to normal. The fire changes the conditions between the living and the dead, leaving the building’s future and the ghosts’ ability to travel uncertain.

After Dave helps open a route back, Simon wakes in the living world and attacks the possessed Hunter-Price with a fire extinguisher. The physical attack confirms that Simon has escaped his limbo state.
It is a deliberately practical payoff to an otherwise metaphysical storyline: Simon’s return is not merely announced through dialogue. He is physically present, able to intervene, and able to fight back against Van Heidt’s attempt to destroy the school.
Who is Van Heidt possessing at the end?
The final reveal shows Sandra Nears looking into a mirror while Van Heidt’s spirit inhabits her body. The possession gives Van Heidt a direct and personal route to Maddie, making the threat much more intimate than his earlier use of Kyle, KC Jensen, or Hunter-Price.
The episode does not reveal exactly what Van Heidt plans to do with Sandra’s body. Her fate, Maddie’s response, and Van Heidt’s broader objective are all left for the next season.
What Season 3 leaves unresolved
- Can the trapped characters escape the liminal forest? Simon returns, but the final status of Maddie’s larger group remains unclear. Dawn, Janet, Wally, and Dave’s routes home are not fully resolved.
- What happened to Mr. Martin? He is last seen amid the collapse of the secret realm. The season does not establish whether he survived, crossed into another realm, or remains trapped.
- How far can the surviving ghosts travel? The fire appears to change the boundary between worlds, but the range, duration, and consequences of that change are unknown.
- What will Van Heidt do with Sandra? His possession is confirmed, but his exact plan is not.
- What happens to Split River High? The building survives the immediate fire, but the demolition threat and its supernatural importance remain unresolved.
- What is the true significance of the eight children and the pastor? Season 3 explains the 1912 flood and corrects the initial assumption about the milky-eyed figure, but the deeper rules governing that realm still have room to develop.
Is School Spirits renewed for Season 4?
Yes. Paramount+ renewed School Spirits for Season 4 on March 24, 2026. The announcement confirms the renewal and identifies the series as a Paramount Television Studios production.
However, Season 4 details are not yet official. Paramount has not announced a premiere date, episode count, production timetable, complete returning-cast list, or full synopsis in the material currently available. The Season 3 ending strongly points toward a continuation involving Sandra, Van Heidt, the liminal forest, Mr. Martin, and the future of Split River High, but those are story implications rather than a confirmed Season 4 plot.
For now, the safest answer is: Season 4 is confirmed, but its release date and detailed story are unknown. Readers should be cautious of articles or social posts presenting an unannounced premiere window or cast list as official.
Is the series based on a graphic novel?
Yes. The television series originated from a graphic novel by Nate Trinrud, Megan Trinrud, and Maria Nguyen. Paramount described the show as based on that graphic novel in its original series announcement.
Best Value
Readers who want to explore the source material can look for the School Spirits graphic novel by Nate and Megan Trinrud, illustrated by Maria Nguyen. It should be treated as the source material behind the series, not as a Season 3 recap, official companion guide, or scene-by-scene explanation of the television finale. The TV series has developed its own cast, mythology, and season-specific plot.
For the original announcement and source-material context, see Paramount’s announcement of School Spirits.
Should you watch Season 3 now?
If you have already watched Seasons 1 and 2, Season 3 is the point at which the show’s central mystery becomes much larger than Maddie’s individual death. It delivers the Simon rescue storyline, gives Mr. Martin’s history greater weight, explains the 1912 tragedy beneath the school, and establishes Van Heidt as a continuing threat.
It is also best watched with the finale available. The season’s last episode does not provide a clean ending: Simon’s return is resolved, but the forest, Mr. Martin, Sandra, Van Heidt, and Split River High all remain connected to unanswered questions. That makes Season 3 a completed season, but not a closed chapter in the larger story.
