Scavengers Reign’s Writers on Creating a Beautifully Hostile Sci-Fi Show

Scavengers Reign turns a stranded-crew survival story into an encounter with an ecosystem that can be as useful as it is dangerous. Its writers could make that world central to the drama because the show grew from a silent short built around visual storytelling—and because creature design, story, music, and sound developed in conversation.

How a silent short became a dialogue-driven series

The series grew out of Scavengers, an eight-minute short that aired on Adult Swim in 2016. Co-directed by Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner, it followed two human survivors on a hostile alien world without dialogue. When Bennett and the team considered expanding that approach to a 22-minute series, he concluded that silence would not sustain the longer form. Dialogue gave the writers room for more character arcs and story threads.

That change did not mean leaving visual storytelling behind. Writer Sean Buckelew said the short had shown the team what could work on screen, giving them confidence to put major visual set pieces into the scripts. The series could let a scene’s strange image or physical action carry meaning while dialogue developed the people living through it.

“Having actual dialogue allowed for more story arcs and threads that we wanted to bring forward.”

“The short’s visual language inspired how we can approach writing and the kind of set pieces we could have.”

Survival comes before science-fiction spectacle

Scavengers Reign follows people stranded after an interstellar freighter goes down on an alien planet. Its premise has the scale of space travel, but the characters’ immediate problems are basic: finding food and water, staying alive, and learning how to deal with a place they do not understand.

Buckelew said the central story was humanity surviving on a strange planet, not a technology-first science-fiction premise. He described the result as having the feel of a documentary about an alien world. The strange fauna and ecological cycles matter not simply as spectacle, but because the survivors have to engage with them to live.

“To me, the real story was humanity surviving on this crazy alien planet, but it wasn’t necessarily rooted in science fiction.”

Huettner has described the people who survive as ill-equipped but adaptable: they make use of the planet to their advantage. That gives the title’s idea of scavenging a practical meaning. The characters are in a place they were not prepared for, and survival depends on noticing what is available—including the ways the local environment can help or harm them.

Creature design and story developed together

The alien life in the show was not treated as a catalogue of creatures to insert after the plot was written. Bennett described the writers working on character and story arcs while the concept team developed creatures in parallel. Designs could prompt story ideas, and the needs of a story could shape what the artists made. Music and sound design also gave the writers material to respond to.

That two-way exchange helps explain why the ecology feels connected to the drama. A creature can be beautiful, grotesque, or dangerous, but its importance comes from what it changes for the people encountering it—and how they adapt. The world is not merely a hostile backdrop; it is an active part of the storytelling.

“The writers were focusing on character arcs and story arcs, but we were also seeing what the concept team was coming up with creatures at the same time so we were able to thread it in real time.”

The influences behind the show’s tone

Buckelew has pointed to survival stories as an important reference, including William Friedkin’s Sorcerer, rather than describing the show as primarily driven by conventional science-fiction ideas. He also cited Akira. In a separate interview, he characterized Scavengers Reign as survivalist science-fiction and fantasy action, existential character drama, and something like a documentary about an alien planet. The references he named there also included Nausicaä, 28 Days Later, and The Last of the Mohicans.

These are reported influences, not a claim that the series adapts those works. Their variety points to the show’s unusual balance: unfamiliar life and striking images on one side, and an immediate, human-scale struggle on the other.

Who made the series

The short was directed by Bennett and Huettner. Green Street was involved in developing it into a series, and Buckelew has described the production as made with Titmouse. In an Animation Obsessive interview, James Merrill and Buckelew were identified as co-executive producers and writers, Bennett as co-creator, and Benjy Brooke as supervising director. Buckelew also described Green Street having latitude to build a production pipeline and bring in international animation talent.

The series has twelve episodes. A June 2024 report said all twelve had arrived on Netflix in a limited group of countries at that time; that dated, region-specific report does not establish present-day availability elsewhere.
