Scarlett Johansson’s most memorable on-screen outfits span quiet contemporary style, superhero iconography and bold period-inspired color. This editorial ranking weighs each look’s recognizability, how distinct it is from her other roles, and what the wardrobe contributes to character or story—not an audience poll or definitive consensus.
What are Scarlett Johansson’s best on-screen outfits?
-
Rosie Betzler’s colorful wardrobe in Jojo Rabbit
Rosie’s graphic jackets, dresses and spectator shoes make this the most character-rich look on the list. Costume designer Mayes Rubeo drew on 1930s Berlin fashion and the work of Elsa Schiaparelli and Sonia Delaunay. The result gives Rosie a vivid visual identity that stands apart from Johansson’s more restrained or action-oriented screen wardrobes.
Rubeo described the shoes as “definitely a character in themselves,” explaining that their brave, colorful design reflected Rosie. The outfit is memorable not simply as a collection of striking pieces, but because its color and personality help the film communicate who Rosie is. The Credits / Motion Picture Association’s interview with Rubeo discusses the design inspiration.

The Black Widow suit in The Avengers
Johansson’s Black Widow suit is the clearest superhero silhouette among these picks: instantly legible as an action-role costume and sharply different from her understated wardrobe in Lost in Translation. In Vogue’s 2022 Life in Looks retrospective, Johansson identified the image as “Avengers” and said, “I am in my Black Widow suit.”

She also made an important distinction about comfort: the particular suit in the image was “fairly comfortable” and easy to get in and out of, while some other Black Widow costumes were uncomfortable and impractical. The suits changed over the role’s decade-long run, so her description should not be applied to every version. Watch Johansson’s Vogue retrospective for her account of the outfit.

The pink-wig image and understated clothes in Lost in Translation
This is the ranking’s quietest look, and its restraint is its strength. Johansson has said the image of her with Bill Murray and a pink wig “has kind of become an iconic one.” The contrast between that singular pop of color and the film’s understated wardrobe makes the image easy to recognize without relying on a dramatic costume.

Costume designer Nancy Steiner said director Sofia Coppola’s personal style informed the clothes, describing the intended effect as classic and understated. Steiner named A.P.C., Agnès B. and Milk Fed among the wardrobe sources. In a 2016 Fashionista interview, Steiner characterized the wardrobe as very much in line with how Coppola dressed at the time.
Why these three looks stand out
Together, the outfits show three distinct ways clothing can define a screen presence: the quiet styling and memorable image of Lost in Translation, the functional but iconic superhero suit of The Avengers, and Rosie’s expressive, period-inspired colors and shoes in Jojo Rabbit. The ranking favors looks that are visually recognizable while also doing something specific for character or story.
