Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn, co-stars of Scandal, shared a brief onstage reunion during the final night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Washington asked for a phone as part of her appearance; Goldwyn joined her with his, and the two led the crowd in a chant.
What happened at the DNC
The appearance took place on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at Chicago’s United Center, during the convention’s fourth and final night. In its contemporaneous report, TheWrap said Washington kicked off the evening and asked for a phone. Goldwyn then came onstage and offered his.
The former Scandal co-stars led a call-and-response with the audience: “When I say ‘When we fight,’ you say, ‘We fight!’” Goldwyn left the stage afterward. The event transcript places the appearance in the convention’s final-night program.
Why Tony Goldwyn appeared with Kerry Washington
Goldwyn later said Washington called him while he was having dinner with his daughter and her boyfriend and asked him to join her onstage. He had not expected to work that night: he had hosted the convention’s opening night and thought he would spend the final evening off duty. In a November 1, 2024, Shondaland interview, he described Washington’s request: “She’s like, ‘Can you come onstage? I want you to come onstage with me. I have this idea.’”

Goldwyn also recalled that convention security required a special rush entry so he could reach the stage. These details are his later recollection of how the surprise came together; the event coverage confirms the onstage phone bit and chant.
Was it a full Scandal reunion?
It was a brief appearance by Washington and Goldwyn, who played Olivia Pope and President Fitzgerald Grant on Scandal. The accounts describe the two actors sharing a stage moment, not a gathering of the full cast, a formal Scandal event, or an announcement of a new production.
