The fourth and final novel, The Story of the Lost Child, returns Elena to Naples, where the friends’ lives converge again—and where loss leaves the saga’s central questions unresolved.
What the final novel brings to a close
The quartet—My Brilliant Friend, The Story of a New Name, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, and The Story of the Lost Child—follows Elena, also called Lenù, and Lila, also called Lina, from childhood into adulthood. Their friendship and rivalry unfold alongside the changing history of Naples and Italy over nearly sixty years, as the publisher describes it in its Neapolitan Novels series listing.
In the final book, Elena returns to Naples and reconnects with Lila after trying to build a life elsewhere. Their adult bond holds intimacy and competition together with family ties and the pressures of a neighborhood marked by history and violence. The publisher’s synopsis of The Story of the Lost Child centers on Tina, Lila’s daughter, disappearing and the aftermath for those around her.
Later, Lila disappears too. That absence echoes the opening frame of the first novel and brings the long narrative back to its starting point. The shape feels like closure; its meaning does not arrive as a neat answer.

Why the ending feels like a farewell—and a refusal
Elena is not simply a witness to Lila’s life: she narrates it, interprets it, and turns it into writing. That makes the quartet’s ending a farewell to a perspective as much as to two characters. Elena’s account gives readers a way into their friendship, but it cannot make her knowledge complete or settle what Lila’s actions mean.
Read this way, Lila’s disappearance can feel both like an ending and a refusal to be fully possessed by Elena’s story. That is an interpretation, not a settled explanation: the publisher’s material outlines the disappearance but does not establish a single motive or symbolic meaning. The ambiguity leaves readers with the same tension that runs through the friendship—deep attachment alongside rivalry, unequal paths, and the limits of what one person can know about another.

What Tina’s disappearance changes
Tina’s disappearance gathers grief around the final novel’s relationships. It is not merely a plot event; it alters how Elena and Lila’s closeness, responsibilities, and responses to one another can be judged. A book-club guide updated September 25, 2026, offers useful prompts for readers: How do you react to Tina’s disappearance? Does Elena behave as a good friend after the loss? Why is Lila angry about Elena’s book on their friendship? These are invitations to debate, not definitive readings of the novel (Wrote a Book’s discussion guide).
Who is the “brilliant friend”?
The title’s question resists a tidy winner. Elena and Lila have different forms of intelligence and influence, and the novels show those qualities through a friendship shaped by admiration as well as rivalry. Readers can argue over who is brilliant, or whether the title describes the effect the women have on each other. Any answer is a reading of the relationship rather than a verdict that ends the debate.

How the books place private lives in public history
Ferrante’s project is not to make history a separate backdrop to the friendship. In an English rendering reproduced on the publisher’s page, Elena Ferrante says: “I wanted to tell only the life of two women. And to do so, it was necessary for me to filter history through the background of their existences, the things that in one way or another had to do with them. I would like the story to help us contemplate, in narrative terms, a piece of Italian history.” The quartet’s long span allows public change to be felt through the women’s private lives rather than detached from them.
Where the HBO adaptation fits
The publisher identifies My Brilliant Friend as the source for the HBO adaptation. The novels and the series are distinct works, however; a discussion of the quartet’s ending should not be presented as a claim about the show’s finale. A careful comparison can ask whose viewpoint frames events, how much interior narration each medium preserves, whether the final absences remain ambiguous, and how each handles the decades-long arc. Specific claims about episodes or current streaming availability require evidence beyond the publisher’s series listing.
