Yes—Saw XI, as originally planned, appears to have been scrapped. Lionsgate removed it from its September 26, 2025 release slot, and producer Oren Koules later said he and Mark Burg could not agree on the film’s direction. The available reports do not show Lionsgate issuing a formal cancellation announcement. A separate, untitled Saw film was reported in September 2026, but it has not been established as the same project.
What happened to Saw XI?
In March 2025, Lionsgate removed Saw XI from its planned September 26, 2025 release date and put The Strangers – Chapter 2 in that slot, according to TheWrap. The move came amid reports of irreconcilable disagreements among the producers.
Lionsgate responded with a playful statement attributed to Billy the Puppet: “I’ve seen the rumors. They say it’s Game Over. You all should know me better than that. The game is never over.” That teased the possibility of more Saw, but it did not confirm that the scheduled Saw XI would proceed.
Why was the planned sequel scrapped?
In an August 2025 interview with ComicBook.com, longtime producer Oren Koules said he and producing partner Mark Burg had a difference of opinion about the film’s direction and could not resolve it. Koules described that sequel plan as scrapped.

What the abandoned version would have been
Koules said the proposed script would have begun 30 seconds after the end of Saw X, and that Synnøve Macody Lund was expected to return. Those are details of the abandoned plan, not confirmed story or casting information for the newer Saw film.
Is a new Saw movie still in development?
Yes, a new installment was reported in September 2026. Bloody Disgusting reported that Mike P. Nelson will direct an untitled Saw film, with a screenplay by Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock and production by James Wan, Jason Blum, and Leigh Whannell. The report did not provide a release date or say whether the film will use the scrapped Saw XI script.
How the two projects differ
| Originally planned Saw XI | New untitled Saw film reported in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Removed from Lionsgate’s September 26, 2025 release slot; Koules later described the plan as scrapped. | Reported as a new installment with Mike P. Nelson directing; no release date was reported. |
| The planned creative team included director Kevin Greutert and the original writing team, as reported by TheWrap. | Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock are reported as writers; James Wan, Jason Blum, and Leigh Whannell as producers. |
| The proposed script was to begin 30 seconds after Saw X. | No connection to the abandoned script or its story has been established. |
What the rights change means
In June 2025, Blumhouse acquired prospective Saw rights from Koules and Burg, while Lionsgate remained a partner and retained its existing ownership and distribution interests, TheWrap reported. This arrangement was about the franchise’s future; it does not, by itself, show that the abandoned Saw XI plan was revived.
The franchise’s commercial history helps explain why another film remains plausible: TheWrap reported in 2025 that the ten Saw films had grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. That is a trade-publication figure reported at the time, not a current audited total.
