Savannah Guthrie spoke during a virtual appearance on NBC’s TODAY on January 20, 2026, about a month after announcing vocal surgery. She said her recovery was slow and that the surgery had worked. The brief update was not her full return to the anchor desk.
What happened to Savannah Guthrie’s voice?
On December 19, 2025, Guthrie told TODAY that her voice had become scratchy and started to crack. She said she had been diagnosed with vocal nodules and a polyp described as non-cancerous, and announced she would undergo vocal surgery and take time away from the program. The Los Angeles Times reported her announcement and diagnosis.
What did she say about her recovery?
Guthrie appeared remotely on TODAY on January 20, 2026. She initially communicated with a whiteboard, then spoke briefly. She said, “I am still on vocal rest, but I’m allowed to talk for about five to 10 minutes every hour.” That was her personal instruction at that point in recovery, not general medical advice. TODAY’s video of the update shows the appearance.
She described recovery as “slow,” said she needed to take it easy, and remarked that talking too much made her start to feel it. Guthrie also said the surgery had worked. TV Insider reported those remarks from the January 20 broadcast.

When was she expected to return to the desk?
Guthrie said she expected to return to the TODAY desk on Monday, January 26, 2026, following the January 23 feature. That was the plan she announced at the time; the reports cited here do not independently confirm what happened on January 26. TV Insider covered the expected return date.
