The Georgia city is Savannah. Its documented public St. Patrick’s Day observance dates to 1824, making it one of the oldest in the United States. It is not the nation’s oldest: New York’s celebration dates to 1762, according to the Associated Press.
Why Savannah’s celebration is dated to 1824
The Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee traces the public observance to a notice published in the local newspaper The Georgian on March 16, 1824. The Hibernian Society invited Savannah residents to a discourse at the Roman Catholic Church the next day and asked its members to meet before proceeding there. The committee describes this as the first documented invitation to the general public. Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee
Georgia Public Broadcasting likewise reported in 2024 that Savannah’s first public parade took place on March 17, 1824, in connection with a historic marker approved by the City Council. Georgia Public Broadcasting
What happened before the public celebration
The committee records earlier private processions in Savannah: Hibernian Society members held one in 1813, and the Fencibles, a local military group, held a private parade in 1818. Those events predate the documented invitation to the general public, but they are not evidence that Savannah’s public parade began in those years. Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee

Is Savannah’s parade the oldest in America?
No. The Associated Press reports that New York’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration dates to 1762, earlier than Savannah’s documented public observance. Savannah’s history supports calling it one of the country’s oldest celebrations, not the oldest. Associated Press
The 1824 date marks the documented start of Savannah’s public observance; it does not mean a parade has taken place every year since. The AP notes that Savannah missed parades in some years, including 2020 and 2021, and that some parades were moved from March 17 when the date fell on a Sunday.

What to know about the celebration’s scale
For Savannah’s 2024 bicentennial weekend, the Associated Press reported that more than 18,000 hotel rooms in Savannah and surrounding Chatham County were nearly sold out. That figure describes an exceptional anniversary weekend, not typical annual occupancy. In the same 2024 report, Savannah City Manager Jay Melder said, “We’re expecting historic crowds from visitors and residents alike.” Associated Press
