Alexander Skarsgård’s first Saturday Night Live hosting turn, broadcast January 31, 2026, was a game but uneven episode built around his Swedish identity, severe dramatic persona and family connections. Cardi B supplied the musical performances, while “Mom Confession,” the Scandinavian character pieces and Jane Wickline’s terrified luge racer provided the clearest highlights.
Episode facts

|---|---|
| Broadcast | January 31, 2026 |
| Season and episode | Season 51, Episode 12 |
| Host | Alexander Skarsgård, in his first SNL hosting appearance |

The milestone mattered mainly as context. Rather than turning the broadcast into a formal anniversary special, the show treated 1,000 episodes as another premise to play with.
How the episode opened
ICE Meeting Cold Open
The cold open featured Pete Davidson as White House border czar Tom Homan and turned the controversy surrounding immigration enforcement in Minneapolis into political farce. The Guardian described the sketch as using comedy to frame the dispute, while also arguing that the execution softened the seriousness of the real-world conduct being referenced.
That tension carries into the rest of the episode: topical political material is present, but it is usually surrounded by deliberately broad character comedy rather than allowed to define the entire hour.

Skarsgård’s monologue acknowledged the 1,000-episode landmark by directing attention toward the house band, then redirected the focus to himself with an intentionally bad saxophone bit. The result was less a nostalgia showcase than a grateful, slightly uncomfortable host introduction—an approach that fit the episode’s preference for oddity over ceremony.
The sketches that made the episode distinctive
“Mom Confession”
Ashley Padilla plays a mother who nervously tells her adult children, “What I have to tell you … is I may have changed my mind … about Trump.” The line is dialogue from the sketch, not a statement outside the show.
Paula Mejía’s analysis in The Atlantic reads the piece as a study of political disagreement within a family. The mother is not asking to be declared correct; she wants permission to change her mind without being treated as ridiculous. The sketch ends with the family beginning to talk instead of cutting her off, giving the episode its most recognizable emotional center.

“Scandinavian Movie 2” (“Stench of a Family”)
This sequel used Skarsgård’s association with austere Scandinavian cinema as its central joke. Chloe Fineman joined him, and his real-life father, Stellan Skarsgård, appeared as his on-screen father. The casting turns the family resemblance and the younger actor’s imposing screen image into material the performers can consciously exaggerate.
“Immigrant Dad Talk Show 3”
Skarsgård played a severe Finnish neighbor, with Stellan Skarsgård returning and Cardi B appearing as the host’s fiery wife. The sketch extended the episode’s nationality-based comic world while giving the musical guest a substantial character role rather than limiting her to the stage.
Winter Olympics Promo
Jane Wickline played a terrified luge racer in a fake promotional spot. Her blunt confession—“I hate the luge. It’s way too fast. It scares me to death, and I seriously hate it.”—is the episode’s cleanest simple character joke: the athlete is completely unsuited to the event and makes no effort to disguise it.
“The Viking Raid”
This sketch pushed the Scandinavian theme into bloody historical parody. It is broader and more cartoonish than “Mom Confession,” but it reinforces how consistently the writing used Skarsgård’s nationality as a creative starting point.
Other listed pieces
The official episode listing also includes “Play Date,” “Tarzan” and “Funny Boyfriend.” Together with the Scandinavian sketches, they give Skarsgård opportunities for deadpan physicality and unusual character work—areas in which the episode was strongest.
Weekend Update and the political frame
Weekend Update revisited Tom Homan and ICE, tying the desk material back to the cold open. Other segments covered Sarah Sherman’s weather report, Luigi Mangione commentary and a horny conversation between “Two People Who Just Hooked Up” about Super Bowl LX.
Rank #4
The sequence shows the episode’s balance: immigration-enforcement satire supplies the topical spine, while the weather, crime and sports pieces keep the show moving through unrelated absurdity.
Cardi B’s performances
Cardi B performed “Bodega Baddie” and “ErrTime.” Boston.com listed both performances among the episode’s highlights. Her appearance also fed into the comedy through “Immigrant Dad Talk Show 3,” where she played the host’s fiery wife.

It is best judged as a committed but inconsistent hour. The writing was most effective when it exploited details that belonged specifically to Skarsgård: Scandinavian-film parody, his intimidating dramatic image, his father’s cameos and his controlled physicality. “Mom Confession” added unusual emotional nuance by allowing a politically changing parent to remain part of the family conversation.
Best Value
The weaker material came when the topical premise did more work than the joke, particularly in the ICE material, whose comic framing risked reducing serious conduct to a punchline. The 1,000th-episode milestone was also intentionally underplayed, which may disappoint viewers expecting a celebratory retrospective but is consistent with the broadcast’s ordinary, sketch-first tone.
Where to watch
Peacock is the official destination for the complete 69-minute episode. The official SNL YouTube channel carries selected clips, including individual sketches and performances, rather than serving as a substitute for the full broadcast.
