What is the movie about?
Saturday Night follows the 90 minutes leading up to the first Saturday Night Live broadcast, which aired from NBC’s Studio 8H on October 11, 1975. The film opened in theaters on October 11, 2024, the broadcast’s anniversary. Sony describes it as a story of the moments before that inaugural show; it is a dramatization, not a documentary or an official movie adaptation produced by the television series.
Director Jason Reitman and co-writer Gil Kenan interviewed people connected with the premiere, including Michaels, cast members, writers, art-department workers and former NBC pages. Reitman told TIME that the filmmaking aim was to make viewers feel the tension of being in Studio 8H moments before air, when it seemed the show might not make it. That intention helps explain the film’s compressed, chaotic portrayal, but it does not make every event literal history.

For example, the fire shown in the movie did not happen on the set as depicted; TIME reports that the sequence dramatizes multiple mishaps. The film’s portrayal of Rosie Shuster and Michaels also simplifies the timing of their relationship. Treat its premise as a dramatized account rooted in a real broadcast and production, rather than a scene-by-scene record. See TIME’s historical explainer for further context.
