A PerthNow report published September 18, 2024, said Thai model Sasinan Chuenlosang was still hospitalized on September 16 after a second hospital diagnosed her with Stevens-Johnson syndrome. The report described symptoms worsening after she received ceftriaxone, but it did not establish that the antibiotic caused her condition.
What happened to Sasinan Chuenlosang?
According to Jonathon Nolan’s report for PerthNow, Chuenlosang, then 31, went to a Bangkok hospital on June 18, 2024, with a sore throat and bloodshot eyes. The report said staff diagnosed tonsillitis and gave her ceftriaxone.
Three days later, the report said, she returned with chest tightness, a rash, a swollen mouth, blurred vision and difficulty walking. She received another dose of ceftriaxone and was also diagnosed with chickenpox, according to the article. It described her rash spreading and her losing sight in her left eye. After she was admitted to intensive care, the report said, she received another ceftriaxone injection; she then felt dizzy and her right eye became blurry and numb.
The report said Chuenlosang spent a week in intensive care before being transferred to Phyathai Phaholyothin Hospital. Staff there diagnosed her with Stevens-Johnson syndrome, the article said. After about a month and a half in hospital, she was transferred back to the original hospital. PerthNow reported that she remained bed-ridden in hospital on September 16, 2024.

What is established about the antibiotic and the diagnosis?
The article describes symptoms worsening after ceftriaxone was administered and attributes the Stevens-Johnson syndrome diagnosis to staff at the second hospital. That sequence does not by itself establish that ceftriaxone caused the condition. The report did not include medical records, a treating clinician’s causality assessment, a regulator’s finding or an independent investigation confirming the cause.
Chuenlosang also alleged that the first hospital did not listen to her complaint. PerthNow quoted her saying, “The hospital would not listen to my complaints. They are so powerful, so I contacted a charity to help with my case.” The report does not establish that allegation as an independently verified or adjudicated finding.
What did Chuenlosang say about her experience?
PerthNow quoted Chuenlosang describing the pain: “The pain was so bad that I really felt like I was going to die. It was intense,” and “My entire body was burning and sore. There are no words strong enough to describe how it felt.”
She also said, “This condition has shattered my dreams. It’s destroyed the life I had before.”
Is Sasinan Chuenlosang still in hospital?
The latest status in the available report is dated September 16, 2024: it said she remained bed-ridden in hospital. PerthNow published the story on September 18, 2024. That report does not establish her health or location after those dates.
