Jackson spoke about playing Dro on HBO’s Insecure, becoming a father, and his identity as an Afro-Panamanian. He described Dro’s composure as familiar, said he wanted to be involved in his daughter’s learning, and called for stories that show people of color in everyday life rather than limiting them to stereotypes.
How Sarunas Jackson approached Dro on Insecure
Jackson told Brenda Barrientos of People CHICA that Dro was not a difficult role for him to play. He related to the character’s calm, cool demeanor, while noting that Dro shows a more defensive, aggressive side in the season-three premiere. That distinction matters: Jackson was describing his connection to one part of Dro, not claiming the character was simply a version of himself.

Jackson also connected Insecure to a broader question of representation. He said, “It’s important for us to see ourselves in everyday lives where we can explore having real emotions that others can relate to.” He added, “I think it’s extremely important for people of color to get these type of specific narratives.” His emphasis was on stories in which people of color have ordinary, emotionally complex lives, rather than appearing only in stereotyped roles.
What Jackson said about becoming a father
In the interview, Jackson called fatherhood exciting and new. Speaking about his daughter, his first child at the time, he said he wanted to take part in her learning and share values and insight he considered important. These comments describe his perspective in October 2018; they are not an update on his family life or views today.

Jackson’s Afro-Panamanian identity
Jackson said he was born and raised in California’s Inland Empire by a Panamanian mother and an African-American father, and identified himself as Afro-Panamanian. He described feeling connected to Panamanian culture and understanding Spanish more fluently than he spoke it at the time.
He said he had never been unsure of his own identity: “I always 100 percent knew who I was — I never struggled with that.” In his account, the difficulty was sometimes other people’s uncertainty about how to identify him. He put his response plainly: “I know who I am and I’m not about to slow down for you all to catch up.” That is Jackson’s experience, not a claim about how everyone with mixed or Afro-Latino heritage experiences identity.
Jackson also said he was working to raise awareness of Afro-Latinidad and advocate for Afro-Latino people. As he put it, “Slowly but surely, I’m trying to keep educating people [on the topic of Afro-Latinidad] and be more of an advocate for the Afro-Latinx community.” The interview presents his personal perspective and does not offer industry-wide data about representation.
