How they met and became a couple
Gellar and Prinze met in 1997 while working on the teen horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer. Retrospective accounts describe them becoming friends during production. Their shared film set marks the start of their connection, not the start of their romance.
They began dating in 2000, three years after they met. In later tellings, they recalled plans for dinner with a mutual friend who did not arrive; Gellar and Prinze went together instead. Prinze has also recalled driving Gellar when she did not have a driver’s license. These are later recollections of how their friendship developed, rather than contemporaneous reports from 1997.
Engagement and wedding
ABC News reported their engagement in April 2001. They married on September 1, 2002, in Mexico. The Associated Press covered the wedding at the time, providing contemporaneous confirmation of the marriage date and location.
