Sandra Bullock appeared on TODAY in August 2024 with a recorded birthday message for co-host Hoda Kotb—not for a live interview. The affectionate greeting marked Kotb’s 60th birthday and came about a year after Bullock’s partner, Bryan Randall, died.
What Sandra Bullock said in the TODAY video
PerthNow reported on 13 August 2024 that Bullock sent Kotb a video greeting for her 60th birthday. Bullock said she had prepared funny material but was “too tired” after celebrating her own 60th birthday in July.

She addressed Kotb as “my sweet friend,” thanked her for welcoming Bullock into her circle, and said, “I feel very grateful.” Bullock also praised Kotb for being incredible to many people, adding, “We’re all pretty lucky to have you.” Kotb became emotional after watching the clip.
PerthNow’s report on Bullock’s birthday message describes the appearance as a rare TV cameo. It was a brief celebratory message, not an interview or a formal statement about Randall.

Why the appearance was described as a year after Randall’s death
Randall died on 5 August 2023, about a year before the TODAY message. PerthNow reported that he was 57 and had lived with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for three years, citing a statement from his family. The article also reported that Randall met Bullock in 2015 when he photographed her son Louis’s birthday.
PerthNow recounted Bullock’s 2021 Red Table Talk comments about her relationship and family, but those remarks are separate from the 2024 birthday video. Bullock did not discuss Randall in the reported TODAY message; its subject was Kotb and her birthday.

How the 2024 clip differs from Bullock’s later comments
In August 2026, NBC News and the Los Angeles Times reported on Bullock’s appearance on the SmartLess podcast, where she discussed Randall’s ALS, caregiving, privacy, and grief. That was a separate, later conversation—not part of the 2024 TODAY segment.
