This is an editorial ranking of five well-documented matches, not a claim that these are objectively WWE’s top five—or a complete ten-match list.
These five picks show different sides of Zayn: a career-defining championship win, a rivalry payoff, a hometown title challenge, a team triumph and a deliberately over-the-top celebrity spectacle. The order weighs story payoff, stakes, career impact, match format and how clearly each bout captures a distinctive part of his WWE career.

1. Gunther vs. Sami Zayn — WrestleMania XL
Zayn beat Gunther at WrestleMania XL to win the Intercontinental Championship, ending Gunther’s 666-day reign. WWE’s profile of Zayn identifies the reign’s length and the title change. The result makes this the clearest career milestone among these picks: a major championship victory over a dominant champion on WrestleMania’s stage.
2. Roman Reigns vs. Sami Zayn — Elimination Chamber 2023
Zayn challenged Reigns in Montreal, where the home crowd and the Bloodline story gave the match unusual emotional weight. Reigns retained the championship; WWE’s profile and match recap frame the event around the Montreal atmosphere and the story’s aftermath. Choose this one for its setting and narrative stakes, rather than a celebratory result for Zayn.

3. The Usos vs. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn — WrestleMania 39
Zayn and Owens defeated The Usos to win the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles. Their victory paid off a story that brought the two longtime rivals back together as partners. WWE’s profile calls it “The Greatest Tag Team Title Match in History”—WWE’s own promotional description, not an independent ranking. It is an essential pick for the payoff and the championship stakes.
4. Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn — Battleground 2016
WWE described this bout as the culmination of the pair’s longstanding conflict and records Zayn as the winner. That makes it a strong rivalry-payoff watch: the central appeal is the history between the opponents and the resolution, not a claim that it outranks every other match on technical grounds. See WWE’s Battleground 2016 coverage.
5. Johnny Knoxville vs. Sami Zayn — WrestleMania 38
This Anything Goes match is the list’s outlier by design. Knoxville beat Zayn using a mousetrap, making the bout a chaotic celebrity spectacle rather than a conventional wrestling showcase. Include it if you want variety and entertainment built around an unusual match format; skip it if you are looking only for championship drama or a straightforward wrestling contest. WWE’s match coverage documents the result.

WWE’s profile and 2025 compilation also name opponents such as John Cena, Seth Rollins, AJ Styles and Solo Sikoa. The available match-specific information does not establish which particular bouts against them belong in a responsible ranked list, or how they should compare with these five. WWE’s 2025 compilation can help you discover more, but its “best of” framing is promotional rather than an independent ranking.
