Spoilers for all of Saltburn follow. Felix Catton is not killed by accident. After discovering that Oliver Quick has lied about his family crisis and manipulated his way into the Catton household, Felix confronts him. Oliver then poisons him and stages the aftermath so that he appears to be the devastated friend rather than the murderer.

Felix’s death is the turning point in Oliver’s attempt to take control of Saltburn. But the film does not reduce Oliver’s motive to either simple romantic love or simple greed. He wants Felix, the Catton lifestyle, and eventually the estate itself—and his desire for each becomes entangled with envy, fantasy, humiliation, and possession.

How Felix dies in Saltburn

When Oliver first meets Felix at Oxford, he presents himself as awkward, isolated, and financially troubled. Felix responds to that apparent vulnerability. He offers friendship, then brings Oliver into the Catton family’s world and invites him to Saltburn, the family’s enormous country estate. This central setup is also reflected in the film’s official synopsis, which describes Oliver’s entry into Felix’s aristocratic social circle and his summer at the estate. Prime Video’s official listing provides that basic premise.

Oliver’s helplessness is largely a performance. He has invented or seriously distorted the story about an emergency involving his family in order to make Felix feel responsible for him. The deception gives Oliver an emotionally persuasive reason to remain close to Felix and gain access to Saltburn.

Felix eventually realizes that Oliver has been lying. More importantly, he understands that Oliver’s presence in the family has been engineered rather than accidental. Felix’s discovery threatens everything Oliver has built: his friendship, his position in the household, and the fantasy that he might be accepted permanently into Felix’s world.

Oliver responds by giving Felix a poisoned drink. Felix dies, and Oliver immediately begins shaping the story around the death. He behaves like a grieving, shocked friend—the exact role that allows him to remain inside the family’s sympathy while concealing his responsibility.

So the direct answer is clear: Oliver kills Felix deliberately because Felix has discovered the deception and can expose him. The film’s later revelations reframe Oliver’s earlier behavior as calculated rather than merely shy or socially inept.

Was Oliver actually in love with Felix?

The film’s most interesting ambiguity is that Oliver’s feelings for Felix are not necessarily fake simply because Oliver is dangerous. Oliver is sexually and emotionally fixated on Felix. He wants Felix’s attention, approval, friendship, and body. He also wants what Felix represents: beauty, ease, social confidence, inherited wealth, and unquestioned access to a world Oliver has been excluded from.

That does not make Oliver’s feelings healthy or reciprocal. His desire repeatedly turns intimacy into control. He studies Felix, imitates vulnerability to draw him closer, exploits his concern, and ultimately kills him when Felix refuses to play the role Oliver has imagined for him.

The most defensible reading is therefore not “Oliver never cared about Felix.” It is that Oliver’s care is possessive and unstable. Felix is simultaneously a person Oliver desires, an idealized object, a doorway into privilege, and the embodiment of a life he envies. Once Felix rejects Oliver and threatens to expose him, Oliver chooses possession and survival over Felix’s life.

That interpretation is supported by the film’s emotional design and by Emerald Fennell’s comments about Oliver’s ideal outcome: a life with Felix at Saltburn. Felix is not merely an interchangeable stepping stone toward the house. At the same time, Fennell’s comments do not turn Oliver’s obsession into a conventional love story. The film presents desire that has become inseparable from entitlement and conquest. Fennell’s discussion with GQ is useful context for that distinction.

Why does Oliver kill Felix?

Oliver’s motive is deliberately mixed, and it changes as the story progresses.

  1. Self-preservation: Felix knows Oliver has lied and could expose the entire performance.
  2. Humiliation and rejection: Felix’s discovery destroys Oliver’s fantasy of being accepted as a trusted intimate.
  3. Possession: Removing Felix allows Oliver to remain connected to the Cattons without Felix’s opposition.
  4. Class ambition: Saltburn is not just a house. It is the physical symbol of the life Oliver wants to enter and control.

It would be too neat to claim that Oliver has a flawless, fully formed plan to inherit Saltburn from the moment he meets Felix. The film’s final explanation makes Oliver sound as though every event was designed in advance, but the story also suggests that his strategy becomes more systematic as opportunities appear and threats close in. His ambition develops through the relationship: first he wants Felix’s attention, then permanent access to the family, and finally control of the estate.

That distinction matters because it keeps Oliver from becoming a standard mystery villain whose motive is only “he wanted the money.” He wants the property, but he also wants the emotional and social power attached to it. Fennell has described the ending in terms of territory-taking and desecration: Oliver does not simply acquire Saltburn; he takes it from the people who made it meaningful and turns it into proof of his victory. Fennell’s interview with TheWrap explores that idea.

How Oliver eliminates the Catton family’s obstacles

Venetia

After Felix’s death, Oliver continues to manipulate the people around him. Venetia is vulnerable, distressed, and increasingly aware that something is wrong. Oliver exploits those vulnerabilities and helps create the circumstances in which her death appears self-inflicted.

The important point is not simply that Oliver causes a series of deaths in a mechanical chain. He identifies each person’s weakness and uses it. With Venetia, emotional destabilization becomes the weapon. Her death removes another person who might challenge Oliver’s version of events while preserving his appearance as a sympathetic presence.

Farleigh

Farleigh is a different kind of threat. He understands the rules of the Catton world and is suspicious of Oliver’s sudden intimacy with the family. He also has his own claim to the household’s attention and resources.

Oliver does not need to kill Farleigh. Instead, he manipulates the social hierarchy so that Farleigh is expelled and dispossessed. This is an important part of Oliver’s method: he does not use one identical solution for every obstacle. He turns the family against Farleigh and removes him as a rival through accusation, influence, and class politics.

Elspeth

Elspeth survives longer than the others, and Oliver uses the role of caretaker to make himself indispensable to her. By this stage he is no longer merely trying to be invited into Saltburn. He is positioning himself as the person who belongs there and who can be trusted with the family’s future.

Oliver ultimately becomes Elspeth’s beneficiary and inherits Saltburn after her death. The film confirms the result—Oliver is the one left with the estate—but it leaves some details of his final manipulation deliberately grim and indirect rather than presenting a conventional crime-procedural account of every step.

In practical terms, the Catton heirs and rivals have been removed in different ways: Felix is poisoned, Venetia is driven toward death, Farleigh is pushed out, and Elspeth is isolated while Oliver becomes her indispensable successor. The estate then passes to Oliver.

What does the opening line mean?

The film opens with Oliver saying, “I wasn’t in love with him.” That sentence is a warning not to accept Oliver’s self-description at face value.

By the end, the audience has witnessed behavior that resembles infatuation, erotic fixation, grief, opportunism, and calculated murder. Oliver’s denial can therefore be understood in several ways:

  • He may be lying to the audience and to himself.
  • He may be using “love” narrowly, insisting that his obsession does not qualify as genuine romantic feeling.
  • He may be trying to control the meaning of his relationship with Felix after turning it into a crime.

The film does not provide a psychological diagnosis or a single authoritative definition of Oliver’s emotions. Its point is that the categories do not stay separate. Oliver can desire Felix and exploit him. He can mourn Felix and be responsible for his death. He can want the person and the world the person represents.

This is also how Saltburn makes the audience complicit. Felix and the Cattons can be cruel, shallow, and capricious, but they are also magnetic. Oliver is monstrous, yet the film gives his rise a seductive momentum. The viewer is invited to enjoy the spectacle of his success before being forced to confront what that success required. Fennell’s comments to TIME and her interview with RogerEbert.com both provide context for the film’s deliberately uncomfortable moral position.

Why is Oliver dancing naked at the end?

The final sequence shows Oliver alone in Saltburn, dancing naked through the halls to Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dancefloor.” On the plot level, it is Oliver’s victory lap. He has obtained the estate and displaced the family that owned it.

The choice of song makes the moment knowingly excessive. Murder becomes a piece of pop spectacle. The audience is given an irresistibly energetic sequence even though the triumph behind it is horrifying. The scene does not ask viewers to approve of Oliver; it asks them to notice how easily style, music, and rhythm can make his victory feel exhilarating.

Oliver’s nudity has a more specific meaning as well. Throughout the film, he performs whatever version of himself will make the Cattons accept him: poor but deserving, awkward but harmless, grieving but loyal. At the end, he no longer needs to perform respectability for them. He owns the house, so he moves through it without permission, clothing, or disguise.

But the freedom is hollow. Felix is dead. The family is gone. Oliver has acquired the estate without receiving the reciprocal love and belonging he appeared to want. The dance is therefore both liberation and exposure: he has finally made Saltburn his own, and in doing so has revealed how completely alone he is.

Fennell has described the ending as joyful, transgressive, territorial, and solitary. Barry Keoghan has similarly discussed it as the unsettling culmination of Oliver’s success rather than a conventional happy ending. Keoghan’s discussion with GQ captures why the scene feels celebratory and disturbing at the same time.

For viewers who want to revisit the sequence through its music, the Saltburn soundtrack vinyl is an official Deutsche Grammophon release, including “Murder on the Dancefloor.” It is a soundtrack record, not a physical copy of the film; edition, stock, price, and regional availability may change.

Was everything planned from the beginning?

The ending presents Oliver as if he has always been executing a master plan. That is partly the horror of the reveal: his vulnerability, grief, and helplessness can all be reinterpreted as performances.

Still, the film does not require the most literal version of that explanation. It confirms that Oliver lies, poisons Felix, manipulates the people around him, benefits from the deaths and removals, and inherits Saltburn. It does not require us to believe that every later event was mapped out with perfect precision years earlier.

A stronger reading is that Oliver arrives with desire and talent for manipulation, then adapts. Felix is initially the focus. When Felix becomes a threat, Oliver changes course. Each subsequent crisis gives him a new opportunity to convert access into control. His plan is real, but it grows more coherent as he succeeds.

Fact versus interpretation

What the film establishes What remains interpretation
Oliver enters Felix’s aristocratic social world and visits Saltburn. Whether Oliver’s plan to own the estate existed in fully formed detail from the start.
Oliver’s account of his family crisis is deceptive. Whether his feelings for Felix should be called love in a conventional romantic sense.
Oliver poisons Felix after Felix discovers the deception. The precise balance between sexual desire, class envy, revenge, and territorial ambition.
Oliver manipulates the remaining Catton obstacles, removes Farleigh, and inherits Saltburn. How much of every later death was planned in advance versus exploited as events unfolded.
The film ends with Oliver dancing naked through Saltburn to “Murder on the Dancefloor.” Whether the dance represents triumph, emptiness, liberation, or all three at once.

The ending in one sentence

Felix discovers that Oliver’s fragile outsider persona is a carefully constructed deception, so Oliver kills him, manipulates the Catton family’s collapse, and inherits Saltburn—but the final dance shows that possessing Felix’s world is not the same as being loved by Felix.

Was Oliver in love with Felix?

The film deliberately leaves the word “love” unstable. Oliver clearly desires and obsesses over Felix, but that desire is mixed with envy, class longing, fantasy, and possession. His feelings may be genuine, but they are expressed through manipulation and violence rather than mutual intimacy.

Who inherits Saltburn?

Oliver ultimately inherits the estate after Felix, Venetia, and Elspeth are dead and Farleigh has been forced out of the family’s orbit. The ending presents Oliver as the sole owner of Saltburn.

Why does Oliver dance naked at the end of Saltburn?

The dance is Oliver’s victory lap after taking the estate. His nudity suggests that he no longer needs to perform respectability for the Cattons, but his solitude also makes the victory emotionally empty. The song and choreography deliberately make murder feel like pop spectacle.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Felix is murdered because he uncovers Oliver’s lies and threatens to expose him. Oliver’s ambition is not only financial: he wants Felix, Felix’s world, and the power represented by Saltburn. By the final dance, he has won the property but lost the person whose approval gave the fantasy its emotional meaning.
